That gun is for the old lacquers and enamels. I personally like it. But for todays b/c c/c paints you will need one of the new HVLP guns.

ok, any suggestions for a reasonably priced gun. What would one expect to pay for a paint gun that will shoot the newer types of paint?

I have seen the good guns priced as high as 4-500.00.

That gun will work fine to learn how to paint and actually paint with. I don't have a new HVLP gun so I still use my old one and I get good results. Get the gun, put and air valve on the end of it and hook it up. You can just fill it with water to get the feel of what knobs do what.
Move up to primer next and then some paint. Don't store it with the water in it, pour a little lacquer thinner in it for storage.
Good luck,
Roger

JGA502, ahhhhh, that gun is darn near sexual to me, what a gun! One of the best things about the JGA502 is so little air is needed to use it. Where an HVLP gun may need 15 CFM (a large compressor) to use it, the JGA502 needs only about 6 CFM as I remember.

I used a little two horse power 20 gallon tank compressor and a JGA502 to earn my $20,000 down payment for my first house in six months time! It is a SUPER gun and I still have mine out in the garage when I want to cheat on the wife. LOL

At one time I owned 6 JGA 502 guns! They ROCKED! They were the only thing to use in my opinion back 10-20 years ago. And they still handle most single stage urethanes very well. Overspray was nasty when using them, I felt like a walking tack cloth after most enamel jobs! Pick yourself up a basic non HVLP gravity feed gun and you will be happy. I don't recomend HVLP guns to the novice as they can be very tempermental with air supply and fluid viscosity. Definately do not buy a SHARP HVLP Cobalt-junk in my opinion. Some of the tiawan copy guns work surprisingly well, and the SATA guns rock!

Talking about Sata, I have a Sata LM2000 HVLP gravity feed and I love it. The paint transfer effeciency is excellent. I'm sure it's paid for itself already. Paint systems are so expensive now you can't afford not to have a HVLP gravity feed IMH. The Devil bliss JGA was an awesome piece in her time. I also have one I use for priming purposes. Oh yeah, I paint aircraft for a living! Tony A. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I sold my JGA to a co-worker and bought an MBC thinking it would be a step up. Gained nothing. Used those guns for years until I got an OMX. Had a love-hate relationship with it and got a Sata. If your buddy's JGA is in good shape, will lay the paint down just fine. Newer guns are better of course. Most of them take a lot of air to run. What size compressor you have?

<insert tire screeching here> Bob, you may have just saved me $150.00. I was almost out the door to pick up a Cobalt. WHat didn't you like?
