: Rust Under Vinyl Top

Hi everyone, I just peeled off my vinyl top from my 66 SS, and found rust down the center of the roof from front to back. One spot is soft and I poked a small hole through. The area looks bad enough that I will probably put another vinyl top on the car just to cover this area after it is repaired.

I'm sure someone else has had this rust problem and I was curious as to how it is best repaired.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Had pretty much the same problem on mine. I used POR-15 Putty, and POR-15 patch. Their products are a lifesaver for old cars!

Thanks, I have one of the POR 15 kits with the putty and all, but I expected to use it around the rear window. That still remains to be seen!

How did you clean the rust off? Can't use a sand media and chance warping anything, I suspect. Thanks again.

Scott, all you need to do is go over the rust lightly with a wire brush to get any loose chunks off. You don't need to remove it, that's what POR stands for-Paint Over Rust.
