And there is a numeral 5 stamped at the top right side, but it's turned 180 degrees.
Does anyone know what the last line means, other than the 06C build date.
I am seriously considering tearing this HB code L48 engine down for a rebuild this spring. It has never been apart, to my knowledge. 193,000 miles.
I will record and photograph all dates and casting numbers at that time.
Should be a 4 bolt with 1182 steel crank and 2482 caps, yes?
I know the heads are 041
Notice the original RC15 radiator cap. The radiator itself is original also with the tag still attached to the Rh tank. And the heater hoses are the original ribbed hoses with all but one of the original tower clamps.
I did a water pump and thermostat at one time and that's probably when the 1 tower clamp went missing. Along with the upper and lower radiator hoses.
There are a few things wrong in the engine compartment due to routine service and replacement of components, so everything is not correct.
Gary S Nov 26th, 06, 10:44 AM I expect the block will be a 4 bolt, but I expect you will not find a steel crank in that engine. My Son has a 69 with L48, and his has the cast crank. Also, his has the 186 heads which were used interchangeably with the 041 head in 69 and 70.

+1 - I'm betting a cast crank.
Woj Nov 28th, 06, 11:14 PM I have the same engine in my 69 Malibu and with the same options. I did the rebuild several years back and was truely amazed how nice it was on the inside of the engine with 130K miles on it. I did have a slight ridge in the cylinder walls, so went .030 over and put new pistons, cam, bearings etc. Runs like a champ now. I wrote down all the cast numbers somewhere but can't find them now. I'm betting you find the 182 crank in there.

You mean 1182 steel crank, right?
What heads are you running?
Does it ping?
I do mean the 1182 steel crank. The car has the stock heads, but I don't recall the cast numbers off hand. I rebuilt it 4 years ago. I had pictures with all the numbers along the way, but those were lost in a computer crash a few years back.
The car does not ping on regular (87 octane), but does run better with premium. I did put in a stock replacement piston so the compression should be the same.

(Almost) every assembly plant seemed to put different information on the body plates, Fremont especially. I'd surmise those two sets of 6-digits are data processing tracking numbers and probably found in various locations on the build sheet, particularly bocks 8 and 24. I have one example of a 69 Fremont sheet (http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/buildsheets/fremont/bs_fre01.jpg)but not the corresponding body plate. May be totally off base, but the 70 Atlanta body plate used the same type of double 6-digit numbers this way (using your numbers as an example).
994516 ~ Data processing numbers - block 24 of build sheet.
16 ~ Data processing number (SCHED. NO.) - block 10 of build sheet.
0278 ~ Data processing numbers - block 24 of build sheet.
As I say, just a guess but if you find the build sheet by some miracle, check 'em out. Be interesting to know if this guess is correct.

Stock compression for this engine is 10.25-1
You must be using different heads??
Thanks for the pictures on the email the other day.
Our L48 had 186s, cast crank, and two bolt mains

What car was it in? And was it original to that car?

69 Caprice, it was original to that car, I do not remember any deck stampings though.
Gary S Dec 3rd, 06, 6:04 PM From what I've seen, Chevy used two different L48 engines in 1969 and 1970. The Camaro-Chevelle-Nova engines are different from the Impala-Caprice ones. The L48's I've been around that come from full size cars have been 2 bolt main blocks, while the Camaro-Chevelle-Nova engines have 4 bolt mains. I haven't seen enough of these engines apart to say that they all follow this pattern.

Gary, I think you are onto something there.
I recently saw a 70 L48 in the wrecking yard in a 70 impala sta wag. It had the 186 heads. Not sure on the bottom end.
I may just tear into mine sometime this year.
I have 3 rebuilt 350's on stands ready to go and would prob just take the L48 apart and inspect, then put a mild rebuilt 350 NOM in there for driving.
My old L48 has 193,000 miles. I hope it's rebuildable, but I'll keep it out for a down the road resto on the car.
Doug Garland Dec 16th, 06, 7:51 PM I'm betting 2 bolt block, 041 heads, and a 2442 cast crank. I've seen several with this layout.

I hope you're wrong.;)
