Im going to use a Base Coat Clear Coat Paint on my 71 SS and was wanting to know about painting the stripes on should i paint the whole hood and truck lid black and then put on the striping kit and paint my solid color or should i just paint the part of were the stripes are going to be instead of the whole hood and trunk lid.

just curious, where would i get a striping kit for my 68? Are they templates? Do they have to be painted on or can they be placed on as you would with, say, graphics?

Here's how I did it and why.

My car is blue with white stripes. I painted the hood and trunk lid white first. I masked off the stripes, then painted the blue.

Believe me, it's easier to mask off and cover up 2 11" stripes than one entire 16' long car with 2 11" wide openings.

Bubba, are you looking for factory '68 stripes, or the '70-72 style "band-aid" stripes? If it's the latter, you'll have to mask them yourself however you like. If you want factory stripes, they're available, probably through most resto catalogs.

Ive seen stripe kits in about every parts catalog. The one i used was from OPG and it was ok, my only gripe was seperating the stencil from the plastic backing, crap was on there.
My car is Red with black stripes, painted the whole car red, then the stripes followed by clear. Let the base color full flashoff before laying the stripes and don't mash the tape on. Never again will i attempt to do it with the hood on the car, my back was in hurtin status after all that leaning over.
