: Muncie Install Some quiestions
1965_SSChevelle Nov 24th, 06, 7:25 AM Ive got the muncie installed and everything hooked up. Is there anything I can check or should do before I start the engine and test it. Also, I dont have my driveshaft yet, will this hurt the trans if I test it with just a yoke in it.
COPO Nov 24th, 06, 10:13 AM Just do the neutral allignment http://ca.geocities.com/1970-z28@rogers.com/images/doc_muncie_adjust_shifter.jpg
I would wait for the drive shaft before fireing it up. Your yoke may go flying out then you'll have smelly gear oil all over the floor.

While I agree starting it with just a yoke but no driveshaft is a BAD idea, you SHOULDN'T have SMELLY gear oil all over if this happens, because your trans should have GL4 lube in it, not GL5. (GL4 has very little smell, GL5 reeks.)

tedixon Nov 24th, 06, 5:46 PM You could use some duct tape or packing tape to hold the yoke in. As long as the transmission stays in neutral, the output shaft should not turn. It's not the best idea. But, if it will be a while before you get your drive shaft, it's hard to wait to start it.
Of course, the transmission needs to be filled with gear oil. There are a lot of things turning in the transmission with in the neutral.
1965_SSChevelle Nov 24th, 06, 8:02 PM Thanks for the replys. I have the correct gear oil in. Made sure of the by reading here. It may be a few weeks before I can get my driveshaft. My main concern is to make sure everything in right with the clutch and its adjustment. Anyway to test this without starting it up.
DZAUTO Nov 24th, 06, 11:01 PM As has already been mentioned, if you start the engine with only a yoke in the tranny, it is possible, but lilelyhood of it coming out is minimal (but it can happen). I have done thid a bazillion times and the yoke has only backed out less than 1/2in with the engine running as much as 1/2hr.
If it does come out, you will hear the clunk and can quickly shut off the engine. So, give it a shot!
1965_SSChevelle Nov 26th, 06, 9:32 PM Fired it up today. Nothing broke, thank god. Thanks for the help.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh??????? How are you gonna hold the yoke in with duct tape? Please advise how this could be done.I suspect that W/O the shaft the trans output is gonna want to turn (possibly it will stop with the oil heated up but I doubt it) The tape is gonna likely get pulled right off when the engine first fires.
