I'm trying to replace my trunk weather stripping. I installed it once, but had a massive leak at the top of the lid. I have new stuff now that is slightly different, but no matter how I install it, I can't get it to seal at the top. Does anyone have a diagram of how the extrusion is supposed to fit?

Be sure that it is the weather strip and not an opening someplace else. I suggest taping over the latch and getting in the trunk with the car out in the sun. You may well find that there is a leak at the top right or left corner through a pinch weld. the water comes in under the molding around the glass through the weld and into your trunk. You should be ble to see the light so to speak with the lid down. This drove me crazy for a long time. Good luck!

If you feel that it is the weatherstripping that is leaking apply a thin coat of Vaseline on the weatherstripping and close the trunk. After you open the trunk you will see where the weatherstripping has contacted the trunk lid. After checking mine this way I found that my trunk leak was the same as Butch’s.

I would also suggest using Butch’s suggestion about taping the latch. I had my wife lock me inside the trunk so I could check for leaks. DON’T DO THIS! A roll of tape has no memory!

I know how you guys feel. I have always been a little afraid to get into a trunk compartment for fear that the someone outside would want to play games. My solution: Whenever you get into a trunk, bring a flashlight and 1/4 inch ratchet with a socket the size of the striker and lock bolts. This way, you can be sure you can get out when you want. OK, I admit it.I have always been somewhat claustrophobic.

Thanks for all your input. I have gotten inisde the trunk and had it closed. (My wife, fortunately is not cruel and let me out when I asked)
The leak is a section about 3 feet wide right in the middle at the top edge of the lid. Even when I pushed up on the edge of the panel between the rear window and trunk lid, I could barely get the gap to close. Its probably a little less than 1/4 of an inch. It's almost as if the panel was somehow bent down when I got it painted. I thought about trying to bend it up , but have no idea how to do it without the potential to pop a weld, or make that section wavy. Not sure if that makes sense. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

I would think You'd be able to bend that section up a little. Use some 2x4's to support a floor jack in the trunk and another piece of wood to use between the jack and the lip of the trunk. Just go slow and take measurements. I would think that 1/2" or so would do it. Measure everything before you start and write it all down.

I was thinking of something like that but haven't been able to really look in there and see if there was anything that could be damaged or broken.

Thanks,

Are you sure you installed the weatherstrip the correct side up, facing the right way? This is a common mistake.

Per my first post, I've tried it every way it can go hoping it would sit higher, but in the end, I resolved to installing it correctly with the "fins" poining up and out, so when the lid closes it presses them out and flat.

Bubba, you did it all wrong.
I put my wife in the trunk until SHE saw the light. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Can anyone post a picture that shows the weatherstripping installed the correct way?

Thanks
