: Yet another bench conversion.....
philbay Nov 23rd, 06, 7:28 AM I apologise in advance for this if it had been dicussed but...... 70 chevelle, I want to know if I have the brackets(sliders) from a bench seat, will I be able to use these for part of the installation and maby just need the inboard brackets. I ordered the 4 piece conversion kit from ground up, but the cores I got are missing the sliders/brackets. Confused..I have a body cores with no sliders. I have a pair of sliders from a bench seat. I ordered the 4 piece bench to buckets mounting hardware. What exactly can I use or still need? there thats clearer I think.. Its the bracket?slider/mounting thing that makes it confusing, OOOO happy Thanksgiven all
Dean Nov 23rd, 06, 8:39 AM Don't think you could make the seat tracks from a bench work on bucket seats even if you had four of them.
Bowtie-72 Nov 28th, 06, 3:56 PM I thought the siders were 1 each of inboard and outboard, and the bench used 1 inner and 1 outer. I might be mistaken, though.
Dean Nov 28th, 06, 6:19 PM I might be mistaken, though.
Me too :(
70 Gold Nugget Nov 28th, 06, 8:17 PM A bench seat has two tracks....on has a lever to allow the seat to slide back and forth...that would be the drivers side...the other doesn't have the lever but it does have a spring to firm it up for lack of a better word...each bucket seat has the same two tracks however the passenger one with the lever is a passenger side levered track...ummm..does that make sense...not all tracks are created equal but you can use your bench tracks for your drivers seat...then you need a pass side levered track and a track with just the spring...now that being said...some bench seats perhaps all of them I can't recall it right now have two bolts for the back of the tracks...you wnat to use only one bolt for a bucket seat...I hope I haven't confused the issue even more....just trying to help....
Dean Nov 28th, 06, 8:44 PM I wasn't sure if the tracks from a bench seat would work on a bucket seat or not BUT I think the track on the passenger's side of a bench seat has the locking mechanism which is operated by a wire running across to the driver's side locking mechanism so I guess you would just have to shorten up that wire. That is if the tracks fit ??
70 Gold Nugget Nov 28th, 06, 8:59 PM Those wires are needed if it is a locking track...the 67 Chevelle I just did about 2 weeks ago DID NOT have locking tracks or wires...the 68 396 Camaro I did before that car did not have the wires either...I am not quite sure but I think those wires are on later model stuff...the old stuff has a spring that solidifies the track...crap I have to go out in the shop and look at the set of 70 buckets I have...stay tuned...
Dean Nov 28th, 06, 10:13 PM Yeah, it's been a long time since I threw away my bench seat and my memory isn't all that great.
:o
philbay Nov 30th, 06, 5:17 AM Thank you. Now Im totally confused. I just bought the sliders for my bucket cores from a fellow member. I just recieved the 4 piece bench to buckets conversion brackets.. I based these decisions on what I feel best from this site. I dont want me or my co pilot kissing the windshield,, Though with drum brakes both of us usually are standing on the pedal at the same time.../ just kidding phil
1972Custom Dec 2nd, 06, 4:54 AM the answer is no. nothing from a bench works with buckets. the holes in the floor do not even come close. i have a 72. mine hade a bench, but now has buckets with 1 bolt that i can put in. the bench tracks seem too look alike, but seem to be longer for a bench. now i have posted, and i will be rong. good luck.

eric13617 Dec 2nd, 06, 7:03 PM Isn't it funny how times change. When I bought my 67 some 16 years ago ,I never thought I would want a bench seat.Took the Oldsmobile buckets out and found a set of buckets for a 67 chevelle, and no I dont want to sell them,.Now I have five kids and have looked for the sliders for my bench for 6 months.Still havent found any.Looked at 3 '70 Monties,a 75 Malibu, and about 15 other cars today with no luck.Still get the same answer too,"I guess your S.O.L."
If anyone around has the sliders for a 67,I would pay top dollar, otherwhise I'll have to consider making them.
Bench seat and bucket seat sliders do not interchange. Not the same.
You did right by buying the bucket seat sliders.
FWIW, I do all of my bucket seat conversions using original bucket seat brackets taken out of parts cars. It's a lot of work to seperate the welds and clean them up, but I like the way they appear and fit better than the aftermarket brackets.
Unless something has changed, the 2 aftermarket bucket seat conversion brackets I bought years ago weren't worth the metal they were made from.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding the bench seat sliders. You just need to contact the used Chevelle parts businesses. You could probably use them from any 66-67 A-body. Even the 4 door non split bench sliders should be the same.

I used the same four outboard bench seat holes for the the bucket seats when I changed mine from bench to buckets and the bucket seat mounting fit prefectly.
I know the way I did it does make the seats a little closer to the seat belt retractors but everything works fine.
