I've been told that its 5/16. also been told that 3/8 will not allow the moldings to fit correctly, but I dont see why when you are only talking about 1/16  I'm looking for a answer also, since I soon will be putting the rear glass back into my 69

You can set the glass in the hole and install a moulding then measure the gap between the pinchweld and glass, or measure the difference before removal, the ribbon will compress alittle during install, or you can also install the glass with modern urethane like the glass companys do now with the old cars, the urethane compresses easier and can be set to the correct depth easier, Bob

I've read on here in the past that it depends on what glass you have. The older original type of glass is thicker, requiring the 5/16 ribbon. If it's a newer replacement glass it MIGHT be thinner, requiring the thicker ribbon. Cal

I'm having the glass man over next week to install my glass (front and back glass) :D . Both pieces are new. I was told that the back glass is the same thickness as original, but the front windshield is slightly thinner than original. Auto city glass (the place I bought the glass from) says that the back glass should be set in 5/16" and the front in 3/8". If anyone has heard different let me know, or has had expierence about it let me know. Would rather not have to pull glass because molding don't fit

ok i tried the 5/16 ribbon, it didnt come anywhere close to letting the window trim fit tight. then i did the 3/8, much better fit. it looked like the old ribbon may have been a 3/8 but after 30 some odd years its kinda hard to tell. thanks guys Dave

My experiences with my '69 agrees exactly with 70SS. I installed a new windshield, which was thinner than the original, and the original rear glass 3 years ago and used 3/8" ribbon on both. The windshield molding fit well but the backglass moldings didn't want to go on. I put a couple small dents in it while forcing it on. I recently replaced the rear glass with a new one from Pilkington Classics. It was the same thickness as the original. I used 5/16" ribbon and the moldings fit perfectly.

Thanks Von and the rest of you all for the helpful post on this subject, as I type this post I am fighting this same problem on my 66, I am waiting for my glass guy to call and will meet him again today. He installed both the windshield and rear glass using 3/8 ribbon, the front trim was tight fitting but the back would not engage the clips, So I hope I am correct because I have requested that he remove the glass and use a 5/16 ribbon this time. Man I hope they click because my painter is going to try and paint the car Saturday. Thanks again guys.

Just returned from my meeting with the glass guy. I can tell you for sure that on a 66 with rear glass that is the same thickness as the original you MUST use a 5/16 ribbon, he removed the glass and the 3/8 ribbon and installed the 5/16, the trim snapped on like a champ, end of story. Thanks guys, that is what makes this site great is all the folks that share their bad and good experiences.
