Has anyone ever used the Do it yourself powder coat kit that summit sells. You spray it on and bake it in a 400 degree oven?

It looked pretty cool to me... I thought it would be interesting to powder coat brackets, horns and other do dads....

I've got the Eastwood powder coating system. Been using it for years. Always do my brackets and pulleys with it, I love it.

Don't use your wife's oven! Let me know what specific questions you have, I'll be happy to answer them if I can.

Have any pics of what the finished product looks like?

I know the article says not to use your wife's oven, Why exactly is that?

You wouldn't want to eat anything cooked in that oven afterwords. Believe me, I know!!!

I got one from sears last year for Xmas. If you look in the 64 show room, you can see my valvecovers, manifold, pullies, and brackets. They come out very nice, but you really need to be just about as clean as when you paint. I always sand blast my parts, then use Brake cleaner (not carb cleaner) while they are hanging ready to be powdered. I got my oven off of Craigslist for free, and wired a circuit in my garage. with small parts I usually place the oven rack on some saw horses, and hang my parts from it using metal hooks, then spray them and carefully place the rack on the top rung. You can buy lots of colors on ebay, or from websites as it is much cheaper than buying the 5oz packs from retailers. I bought 5lbs of black, chevy orange, and chassis black for $29/ea. You can buy packs of the powder from sears for 4.99 they have lots of options. One pack has enough powder to do one valve cover. I tell you, that you will have a lot of fun with it. I almost always powder coat if it can fit in my oven, you can use it a lot quicker than if you were to paint it. My wife says im a powder coating fool. I even do other stuff besides car parts... at the drop of a hat im out in the shop coating away. I can coat car and motorcycle rims in my oven.

Torndown..

Can you say, "Poster Child For Powder Coating".... You sold me...... A couple questions though...

Do powder coat smell? Meaning is there and odor when you are cooking it.

What happens with the oven that I can't clean it out with some easy off and use it for normal purposes?

Thanks I again.. I am gonna go check out the showroom.

I bought the one that they sell at harbor freight, very happy with it, I have coated many parts for the 71 SS I am restoring. I also have bought most of my power on ebay. Love watching that power melt into a beautiful coating! I would try to find an old oven to use though, it can make a mess (maybe just me) but I don't think I would cook parts in an oven that the turkeys going to be cooked in unless I was going to give it a nice shiny brown coating!

Well it isnt so much a nautious odor as it smells like melting plastic. Its not too bad if you do it outside. The powder does drop into the oven and it does continue to smell. Again it isnt anywhere near paint fumes just uncomfortable to the female nose somewhat like nitro or gas or paint. Im not sure if you can clean it with normal processes.

Anyone ever try the Pearl, Metallic, or Candy powder coats... was curious how those looking when completed?

Another Question..say you powder coat something and you missed a small spot, can it be touched up?

Also, how do you remove powder coat. say for instance you coated a valve cover and wanted to redo it?

sanding it, or media blasting works well, I have no idea if chemical strippers work.

Aircraft stripper takes it right off.Had my home made double adjustable rear control arms coated and the suckers didn't cover the threads in the ends;like I had asked.I didn't think I'd ever get the heims to screw in until I broke out the Aircraft stripper.
By the way ,I had the inside and outside of the rear end coated,a 9in.ford,looks great and helps the gear oil stay where it's suposto.

i too have my powder coating hot coat from eastwood. i have had it for about 4 years and bought it off ebay for cheaper. they work great. get a oven that you do not use to eat. you do not want to risk health issues. as mentioned above, there are plenty of people giving away ovens for free on craigslist. i also have a mini toaster oven for smaller jobs. most brackets and pulleys will fit into one of the oster toaster ovens. it is one of the bigest small ovens. you will have fun with a powder coating system. i think it beats just spray painting them.

you can powder coat areas again if you have missed a spot.

Can multiple colors be powder coated, such as a license plate? How would you mask off for different colors, numbers and letters being a different color than the background. I have heard some one does this but I don't know the procedure.
