: Is this rust, or is it a coating?

I stripped the paint, sandblasted, wire wheeled, then applied Dupont 5717 & 5718. If you look closely at my photos #53 & #55 (click on the link on my sig), there are some orange/brown areas. It's most visible on the lower edge of the quarter panel where it is spot welded (photo 55), and where I welded a rip on the top edge corner of the quarterpanel to taillight flange about three inches above the tail light hole (in photo 53). There was NO rust before I applied the Dupont 5717/5718. Is this rust, or is it actually a conversion coating of some sort?

Did you decide to not take the advice you got from several other people in at least two different threads concernimg the use of metal conditioner? We can lead you to water, etc....but... smile.gif smile.gif

Mike,

Are you using etch primer? I caught some of that last thread, but cant remember if you said you were using etch or not. ONe thing I DO remember is the fact that most everybody suggested NOT to use any sort of metal conditioner under an Etch primer. I used/using Sherwin Williams etch, and know from the PDS that it INSISTS that you NOT use any sort of metal conditioner prior to shooting the etch primer. As you know ;) , I kind of take my time for various reasons, and I have had no problems with my etched panels, and a few have been directly exposed to water (not day after day though). They havent been sanded yet either.

If I was you, and WAS using the etch primer, Id take ALL of that metal conditioner off with sanding or whatever takes it off, then clean the panel and whatnot with wax/grease remover, THEN etch prime it. Im not sure of Dupont stuff, but I doubt that you can use metal conditioner and etch together in their product line..I might be wrong, Im no pro, BUT I am SURE Dupont has a website where ALL the PDS are available. Its worth the time to download that stuff, saved me a lot guess work (even the MSDS sheets are worth it). Still, your car is looking pretty good! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The metal treatment process does leave behind a brownish rust colored "film" sort of speak.
Spraying 2 coats of Variprime would have been easier. If you followed the tech sheets on that metal treatment process go ahead and prime with your epoxy or uroprime or whatever just make sure its NOT an etch primer...Eric

Doing what the Dupont tech sheets say for Corlar epoxy primer. Using 5717/5718 followed by the Corlar.

I agree with you on the tech sheets, I downloaded all the ones that I could find on Dupont's website.

Thanks for the compliment. Still have a long way to go!

I hope your Nova is coming along well.

Thanks! I was concerned about the "film". Seems to be especially prevalent in areas that were sandblasted. Not sure why exactly.

Yes, I got all the tech sheets I could find for the products I'm using. Dupont recommended a 5717/5718 combo under the Corlar. Who am I to argue?
:D
