Hi all,
I have a 1971 Chevelle Malibu (4 door), which is my daily driver. Inattention to the front fender drains caused rot behind the front wheels; leaking trunk seal contributed to rot around the rear wheel wells. This is a daily driver, not a show car. I'd like to make it decent, without spending a fortune. And, I have ZERO experience welding.
If the rust is thoroughly cut away, and everything is sealed well with an epoxy primer when I'm done, can I make a decent repair to these areas with fiberglass mat and bondo? (My Chilton body book says it's OK, but I'm not sure whether to trust them!) Would I only be kidding myself, and see the evil rust monster return in a matter of months?
If welding patches is definitely the way to go, can you point me to the right equipment and info on technique? (Since I bought the BIG compressor,I already have a 20-Amp 220V outlet available in my garage.)
Much appreciated,
mark.
