thanks for all the info on all my questions! I have one last one, do I strip a rear quarter and then put the patch, then epoxy prime, then bondo, 2k HB prime or do I strip, epoxy prime and then patch, then bondo and prime.

Strip, patch, prime.

The mig doesn't like painted surfaces. Etch or epoxy.
I'm not an expert, but I would not flange the patch panel.
Butt the seam and tack with the mig.
Once you grind it flat, prime it.
Looks better on the inside too if it can be seen in the trunk.
