: 1970 ss 396 or 454
anychevy Nov 19th, 06, 10:45 PM O.K. I'm not new to this, but I've been out of it for a while and things have changed dramatically in the last 5 years or so price wise.
I'm in the market for a DONE car, I'm after a driver not a trailer queen, so
I guess a #2 car, I don't care about paperwork as long as the car is mostly correct, original and stock ! NOM and or BOX are O.K., 4 speed preffered but T400 O.K. , must have all the basic ss options as well.
Seems that after watching eBay for some time now, only about 1 out of 10 cars actually reach reserve or the BIN price, so the big question is, What will 30 to 40K U.S. buy me ? Is that realistic ? Dealers vs private sales vs eBay, etc. etc. ? As many opinions as possible please.

SoCal Bryan Nov 19th, 06, 10:58 PM I've seen a lot of nice un-matched #'s 454 SS Chevelles under $30K. I'm not sure why anybody would pay more than that for an un-matched car anyway, regardless of what it is.
anychevy Nov 19th, 06, 11:08 PM that's great, thanks, I'm trying to get a feal for the market again, I'm also on a different continent so I'll be looking mainly in the western states, keep em comming guys ?

BlueSS454 Nov 19th, 06, 11:34 PM It's a bogus auction. There have been quite a few of them around lately. Notice the high bidder is Bidder 5? I just went through this type of thing yesterday. I was watching a 94 Caprice on the bay and all the bidders were sequencial....Bidder 1, Bidder 2, and so on.
anychevy Nov 20th, 06, 12:10 AM nice car though, not my taste but nice ?

anychevy Nov 20th, 06, 9:38 PM so, can I assume, 30 - 40k will buy a nice driver quality car (big block, good body, new or newish paint, new interior, all ss options ) real ss or well done ss clone ? anyone else want to comment ?

chevguy65 Nov 20th, 06, 10:01 PM 30-40k should get you a pretty nice car imho.
anychevy Nov 20th, 06, 10:16 PM thanks,
just wanted to know if I was in the ballpark.

31 chevy Nov 23rd, 06, 8:58 AM That range should get you a real SS in nice shape unless it's a high hp car or with some rare options. I see em go under 30 around ky quite often. A real 70 454 in #1,2,3 condition is going to be much higher than say a 396 325hp type of car. The cars are out there you just got to take the time and find the deals. They are there though.

oldtimebaseballfan Nov 23rd, 06, 10:36 AM If you are looking at a 396-350 hp, you will definitely get a nice SS that is real. Just be careful with the documentation. Ask questions on here so you don't get fooled.
anychevy Nov 23rd, 06, 3:38 PM thanks again, I'd be happy with decent 396 car, I'm not expecting a car like this

I'd never drive a car like that
This is more what I had in mind

I'm more concerned with interior, body & paint than mechanicals, an average decent paint job on a good body here costs 10K not including body any work, engine & trans etc. are about the same as the U.S.
But there's an old saying here "anything looks good in a photo"
