There is a special wrench made for that but if you don't have it, knowing it doesn't help you much. Your idea of sliding the clip forward is about it. If you can get just a couple of the bolts loose and then 'hit" the hinge somehow it will move. Now in your case, going rearward would mean that you would need to "hit" it back with a slide hammer.

were could i get that tool at?
after many failed attempts at guessing where the bolts should be tightened, i ended up taking the fender off, the only question was "why didnt i just take it off sooner?"...besides being the correct way to do it, it made things much simpler and, unlike you (it sounds) i didnt need to adjust the fender and radiator support back or forward (reason #2 to remove fender)
i would remove it, its not as tough as it first appears, and since youre going to loosen it up anyway...theres reason #3
unless its finished and you cant recruit some help to take it off and you somehow damage the paint (which, with a helper and a reasonable amount of care, you shouldnt), you wont regret it ... good luck

It's easier with the fenders off, but not impossible with them on. I used one of those swivel head ratcheting box end wrenches to get in to the bolts attached to the car on my 69.. I wrapped it with tape to not scratch the paint. Loosen all but one bolt on the upper and lower hinges. You want to "walk" the door back by first loosening the last lower bolt just enough so that you can pull up on the door and move the bottom forward slightly. Then tighten the bottom bolt. Then loosen the upper gradualy and ever so slightly so the door is able to slide back down into position, maybe with a little help from your hand tapping down on the top of the door. You might have to do this several times to get it back fra enough. The key is not to loosen the bolts too much so that the door slides around on its own.

LT1chevelle, I can't believe it but they don't have the wrenches on the Snap On web site. The numbers are S9606A and S9608B for 1/2" and S9607 (specific note in catalog "Designed for 67-78 Oldsmobile and Buick Vehicles" which of course would include Chevy being they are the "same") and S9619 (mentioned for Chrysler and Chevy trucks) for 9/16".
I don't have the SAE ones because I only work on late model cars at the shop. I may just get me one though.
