: Using POR-15 on front and rear wheelwells, got some questions
Shawn Jul 29th, 02, 11:05 PM The front wheelwells were originally just painted satin black inside and out, and POR-15 would obviously be a better choice for the underside. Anyone ever have any problems with it cracking or anything? I know the fenderwells tend to flex when reinstalling them.
Also, the rear wheelwells were the same thing except with undercoating over them. When I get to that part, I'd like to spray the undercoating back on. Will it stick to the POR or would I be better off spraying some black there and then putting undercoating over it? I know some of you skip that because it holds moisture but it's there for sound deadening too which is why I'd put it back. Thanks for any info.

Randy Mosier Jul 30th, 02, 5:03 PM You might want to give the folks at Por a call on this one. I don't recall ever reading about anyone else wanting to spray undercoat over Por 15. You'll probably have to use Por's tie-coar primer followed by a black enamel of some sort, but I think you should consult the tech people at Por.
fastss396man Jul 30th, 02, 9:45 PM Shawn,
I can handle this on efor you. I used POR-15 with the Chassis Black top coat on both the inside and outside of the front inner fenders. POR-15 is flexible so it won't crack.
Next I also sprayed the entire underside of my Velle with POR-15 and topcoated with Chassis Black including the rear wheel wells. I then sprayed the undercoat back on in the rear wheel wells. You should be able to use either a petrolium base or rubber base coating. I used a petrolium base and it has never come off. Also I've heard some guys starting to use some of the spray in truck Bedliner material too.
Give it a go you'll be fine. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Shawn Jul 31st, 02, 2:30 AM Thanks, that sounds good, I'm glad to hear it adheres well. Man, with two different coats of POR-15 and then undercoating, that metal should be bulletproof!
How well does that stuff spray? I bet it makes a mess. Do you have to thin it with something? How do you get your paint gun clean afterwards?
MAXX2 Jul 31st, 02, 10:55 AM When we had our '69 body beadblasted and the frame/suspension pieces beadblasted and powdercoated, they powdercoated the inner fenders. They did them two tone black/grey. They probably would have lasted forever, however, we didn't like the two-tone effect and sold them.
If we do buy and install inners fenders, we would probably use flat black powdercoating.
Just a suggestion or two.

As I reassembled the underside of my 69 I painted everything with POR 15, then detailed the chassis, gas tank etc with various good quality topcoats. I used rubberized undercoating on the rear wheel wheels (not to thick). The car looks good, has the protection of POR, and the topcoats are holding up great.....
dougs70ss Aug 2nd, 02, 12:34 AM Shawn,
I always try to spray POR15 rather than brush. Its sprays on just fine, but cleanup can be messy - Dont let it dry in your gun. I have trouble getting the bubbles out when I brush it on. Maybe its the crappy throw away brushes I use, but the spraying really works nicely.
paulymuller Aug 2nd, 02, 8:47 AM Just make sure you wear crazy ventilation and respirators, because if you breath in it will bond to the moisture in your lungs, which is bad, bad, bad.
