Does this hole cut inside the kick panels look like it was original, where my car originally would have had dual front speakers or did someone go crazy with a torch to fit the speakers in where they did not belong.
This is a picture before I started the restoration of the car.
It looks like a configuration of a speaker grille outlined in the plastic.
I wonder what speakers I can fit in there now, to get some nice tunes?

don't think those are original, but looks like 6 x 4s will fit in there

My 69 Malibu with kick panel speakers was cut with a torch as well. The speaker openings in the kick panels looks like factory cuts. The only difference I see, and it may be a 68 issue, is that it looks like the top of the hole was cut with a torch as well. My cuts are just on the vertical. The 69's had a horizontal metal brace in that area and the brace was cut out with a torch. I have seen that on numerous cars.

Yes,
that is original.
Your car had a 4 speaker stereo system originally.
There is a small metal grille that goes over that. You can look in any 1968-72 Chevrolet for them. And they may even have come on earlier cars.

I managed to get the complete AM/FM blue light stereo and all four speakers and screens out of a 1969 Impala years ago. Same same.

GREAT!
Nothing like 4 speakers in a convertible!
Thanks for the info.
Does that mean I should look for the 8-track tape deck that goes underneath the dash (does that have the 4 speaker control built in?) or is it supposed to have the multiplex system with it? I have purchased a used 1968 AM and I believe that a real 68 AM/FM is quite rare and expensive.

1968 was a pretty unique year for most anything.
