I was just reminded about a very important point when installing a door or latch. It is a darn good idea that the door will actually open and close before you close it!

This seems simple, yet a pro will tell you we all have done it a time or two while working day to day with cars.

You install a latch or door and shut it, only to find out the latch was broken or the actuator rod wasn't on, something was preventing the door from opening. It is a very, very bad place to be. Especially if you have installed the door trim panel!! It happens, don't laugh.

I have gotten into the habit of testing the latch EVERYTIME (God, don't let me forget tomorrow after posting this ). BEFORE I install the trim panel and BEFORE I shut the door I take a screw driver and click the latch all the way shut. Then I test the door handles both inside and out to be sure they will release the latch. Then I lock and unlock the door with the key and the inside lock. It has saved my butt more than once, I'll tell your that.

Just this past Friday I watched another guy in the shop that had not done this. It took him a few hours to get a Honda door open that he had not installed the actuator rod! Don't laugh, it happens.

I do this with trunks and hoods too, it is very cheap insurance. graemlins/waving.gif
