Ok guys. Tommorow I'm seperating the body from the frame on a pretty much gutted shell. I know that I have to make custom "horses" to hold the body up but the question is about how high am I looking to raise it so that I can roll the frame (w/rolling stock) right out from underneath it? Any tips or tricks you guys can recommend when I do this? Here's the car now: (I've dissassembled the enitre front clip since pics)

I raised my el camino to the roof of garage even took auto door opener arm off, I was able to sit under the body to weld etc etc etc I used 12x12"
(RR) ties I dont trust cinder blocks
Actually I'm ready to droP (excuse the expression) the body back on the frame, next weekend , ran gas and brake lines , didnt want to wait on that
Good Luck

I used a cherry picker and chain hooked in the front lower firewall body mount access holes, and a floor jack stacked with boards behind the rear axle to hit a flat body area above the gas tank, which I removed earlier. this gave a fairly stable three-point attachment/lifting arrangement.

Working both ends alternately I was able to slide two 8 ft 4x4s between the rockers and the frame.
I placed saw horses at each end of the 4x4s
and lowered the body to rest on the 4x4s, supported by saw horses. Next I simply rolled the frame out.

I did this alone on a level concrete pad, took my time and triple-checked each step before proceeding to the next.

Btw, I was able to borrow heavy steel saw horses from the place I work at, so use what you can and overbuild it, make it safe!

I used four 55 gal drums to raise my 66ss.

You can use the engine hoist in steps by lifting the front part way and block it up, then move the engine hoist to the rear and lift it higher than the front and block it up, then back to the front and lift again to the final height.

I used 4 x 4 's under the front body mounts and cinder blocks on the sides. In the rear the hoist can hook to a chain from the center and hook the chain ends to the inside of the trunk body braces at the rear. It has to go high to let the tires clear the rockers if you are going to roll it out on stock tires. In the rear I blocked mine up with a 4 x 4 directly under the wheel well recessed area using cinder blocks on the sides.

I had some spare tires and wheels and I stacked them under the body in case we have an earthquake and the darn thing falls down.

This was just to get the body off so I could work on the frame. For the body work I will mount the body on a rotisserie and the 4 x 4 are not very stable if you are going to be pushing and pulling on the body panels.

Good Luck.

I had a buddy bring his cherry picker over. with both his and my cherry picker it took longer to hook them up than to remove the frame from out of the car.

hooked chains to front mounting points at fire wall and in the trunk.

That's a great point and if you have the room you can put the tires on those caster dollies and slide it out the side and then you don't have to be up so high!

Great idea, but you have to have room, 4-caster dollies and 2 engine hoists. I'll do it that way next time, actually I think I will put it back together that way LOL

Great site full of great ideas, thanks

Crap!! I did it RED NECK! With 6 jack stands and a floor jack. I placed 4 of the jackstands around the underside of the body and 2 on the rear axl. The floor jack supprted the frame under the oilpan. I unbolted, drilled heads off bolts, and sawzalled them frikkin off. Lowered the front down till the a arm bottomed out. Jacked up rear axl and dropped the frame Put the frame on wheel dollies and slide it out one jackstand to jack at a time. I put the wheels back on and rolled the frame into the garage. I put the body on a sheetrock dolly and rolled that into the garage as well. It seemed easeir then I had thought. Check to see if your car has been shimmed. You may want to keep a note on how many shimms came from which. GoodLuck
