Is there a way you can tell a 69 SS from a regular Malibu provide they are both 136xx cars. Any characteristes. I know that 69 SS had big blocks, turbo 400, or stick and 12 bolts. Any thing else?

Try doing a "search" on identifying an SS car..there has been quite a bit of dialogue on this subject over the yrs. It's almost impossible to prove that a given car is an SS w/o supporting documentation, esp. now with so much repro stuff available. If you are looking at a '69, be careful and do your homework!

lots of stuff.. There is a link in here for that.. just don't know where.
With all the clones out there the best way is to have the original build sheet.

Build sheet can be faked, POP can be faked, even the cowl tag can be faked. Hell, I've even seen blank vin tags on ebay, so even a W code vin could be faked. Here is a start though.

Just to add to the two above good recommendations, just about anything that came from the factory with the SS option can be put on later. One item that might be overlooked is the steering column at the rag joint area.

Big block - note coupler is bolted to the shaft...

Small block had the coupler pressed on the shaft. Both photos courtesy of Dean Call.

I've found the same is true on 67s with one exception being Malibus equipped with a tilt column also had the bolt-on coupler and it may or may not be true with other years as well.

As a side note, 1969 was the only year the SS option could be ordered on the 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan (13427) as well as the 300 Deluxe 2-dr coupe/hardtop (13437). I think a 12-bolt could be ordered in any series/model in 69 too and, naturally, manual transmissions as well.
