I need some advice on tearing down my Camino and repainting it. Here goes:

I want to tear the front clip off the car and paint each piece seperately with a 2001 Porsche Meridian Metallic. Is it better to the body work with the panels on the car of have them off the car. Seems to be a matter of preference. I know 70_chevelle had some issues with his NPD fenders lining up correctly. However, I am going to be using the fenders I have already. They seem to be in decent shape except for each fender has rust in the lower usual spot which will get patch panels.

Second, what is the best way to fill small holes in fenders/doors/panels? I would imagine MIG welding but I have also heard of using lead for these areas. Is that recommended?

Finally, I stripped the car the last time I painted it 10 years ago. The adhestion seems to be good except for the fact I didn't block the car enough. Should I strip it all the way down to bare metal again and then put a coat of good filler on? It seems there are so many differing opinons on what to do. I just want to tackle it the correct way. It has baremetal/fill-n-sand primer/sealer/topcoat using Deltron.

Sounds like you have a good foundation to work with as long as there isn't any cracks, crazing or bubbles. I would clean it with a pre-paint solution and lacquer thinner. Then block it out with a nice new 18" board with 180. Then use a good urethane primer/filler and repeat with 220 then 400 for final. You may need an extra coat or two on the low areas after the intial blocking. See what you have first. Use a light hand and don't press 'down' too hard. You don't want the board to follow the contours of the surface, you only want to remove the high spots.
As for the rust repair and work on the fenders, as long as there's no edge re-contouring or shaping to do, it's best to work on them off of the car. However, I would paint them installed. It's too easy to screw up fresh paint when trying to put them back on and get them lined up. I've tried it all different ways, but painting with all panels on the car is the much easier and safer way to go. Except for the hood and deck lid. I remove them for painting, but do them at the same time.

Kewl, I though I could get away without having to strip the entire body.

However, I do need to straighten the left 1/4 panel. So this will have to go down to the bare metal and then need to be primered. Can you use a self-etching primer over an existing painted surface?

When I painted my car 10 years ago, they said to put down a sealer coat before putting down the topcoat. Does this still need to be done or are the primers today much better?
