: Reading Header Temps w/ceramic coating?

Does the ceramic coating on headers not allow true temperature readings with a infra gun? At operating temp (180 degrees) my readings have a very wide
spread. I'm still trying to get this 950HP dialed in. This thing ETs okay (same as 800DP w/proform center) and seems to run cleaner on the street. It certainly idles better than the 800 did. But it bothers me that the air adjustments don't have the effect that they should. I decided that if the primary tubes were fairly consistent, I wouldn't worry about it. But I'm getting readings anywhere from 142 to 285. Patrick says in his tape that the gun should read about 650 degrees and you should add approximately 300 to that for a true exhaust temp. Is it me, the gun or the coating. Patrick also says to read pipes just as engine is warming up before the primaries have time to transfer heat and equalize readings. If anybody can help, I would really appreciate it. I just think this thing should out ET an 800 if properly tuned. Also which manual will give me the best step by step tuning on this carb. Patrick is very helpful, but he has better things to do than answer my little elementary questions.
