: windshield removal tips
kmchugh Nov 17th, 03, 10:57 AM I just removed my windshield (in one piece  ). I just wanted to share a couple of tips for anybody else attempting this job. I started with an E string from a guitar. This was too thin and broke. I decided to help things along a little with a utility knife. I tried to cut away as much of the sealer as I could. It turns out, I got almost the entire windshield free using this method. I used a slim screw driver to help dig out the sealer. I then used a B string in the places where the windshield was really stuck to the sealer. This was working well, but it too broke. For any of you doing this, use the next size string (not sure what note), and have several them around in case they break. It doesn't look like I'll be able to use the utility knife on the sealer in the rear. The channel there is much more narrow than the front.
The job went fairly easily. Most of all, be patient, don't push too hard on the windshield to get it free.
P.S. Don't lever the screw driver against the glass to dig out the sealer, it will chip the edge of the glass.
Regards, Kevin

Bo6869ChevelleMan Nov 17th, 03, 8:23 PM I just did this 2 months ago on the rear windshield on my 68 Chevelle. I also used some old guitar strings (3-to be exact) one small one and two bigger ones.Made my own handles from a wooden dowel rod, then drilled one hole in the center of each one and then put the string through and then wrapped duct tape around it a few times. It worked preety good. But as the above had mentioned, take your time and have patience when popping out the glass.I had to saw around mine several times and appling light pressure before mine came out. zachscc Nov 17th, 03, 8:38 PM I just did my front and rear windshields with stainless steel braided windshield removal wire that I bought at the auto paint store for $10! It came in a 72 Foot role and I only used about 5 feet after using the wooden dowels, It never broke once! I did remove as much sealant with a knife without touching the glass first. Let me know if you need the name of the co. that makes it.
Bo6869ChevelleMan Nov 17th, 03, 10:04 PM Im gonna get me some of that wire instead of using old guitar strings, THANKS. Can you post the name of the company who makes it? Mark
