I was assuming id go with base coat clear coat ppg process. Whats the story on single stage. I imagine not as nice looking outcomes?

If you are shooting a solid nonmetalic color there are some advantages with single stage. Repairability is one, and reduced material expenses is the other. Solid color single stage jobs look excellent when properly done. A two step spray proceedure is often done---two to three coats then wetsand then apply two more coats and colorsand and buff. Sometimes I add a 50/50 mix of a compatible clear to the last two coats for increased depth and more glow with lighter colors. Compatible clear meaning a clear that shares the same hardners and reducers as the color. Rock chips can be repaired very easily with single stage solid. Dupont showed me the 50/50 clear mix, and it is a requirement with their Chroma 1 system when shooting metalic single stage. All of PPG's single stage urethane systems have compatible clears-Omni, Deltron, Concept, and Global. :D

you can get a urethane single stage but if your spraying a metallic color it can be a real pain in the butt to spray, O.K. with solid colors though.

Do you guys think the time and money with BC/CC is worth it? I like the idea of adding some clear to the final coats on single stage. Maybe I will look into doing that. I havent decided on color either. So its all up in the air.

I painted mine with single stage paint, its a solid color so I didnt have to worry about the metallic. I also color sanded and polished and its VERY smooth and shiny, I always get complements on the paint. You CAN get good results either way.

We recently painted my s-10 blazer dark metallic green with 2 coats SS acrylic enamel and 2 coats clear. Looks great, and very shiny! No problems with spraying the metallic, probably because of the straight clear we sprayed over top.
