: Removing house paint from car finish

I just picked up a nice Buick LeSabre for a daily driver. The only real problem is the guy I bought it from said someone threw a gallon of house paint on it. He was able to get to it before it was all completly dry.

Unfortunatly he took some sort of course scrubber pad to it and ruined the finish on the paint. He even got to the primer in a few places.

So my question's are:

1. What could I use to remove the rest of the paint with out harming the car's finish, or the vinyl top. I asked him if he knew what kind of paint it was, and I swear he said, "It smelled like Sherwin Williams to me".

2. Since the paint is scuffed that far down, is it ruined, or could I stand a chance of buffing it with something. If so, what would you guy's recomend.

Thank's for any input. Cal

Down to primer is just that--down to primer. That means there is no color to buff out. If the rest of the car is decent, and the body is straight, take it to a shop and have it repainted. They can certainly get the "Sherwin-Wiliams" of off it first. I just hope it isn't Home Depot paint, because that stuff only ever seems to adhere to places that you want to clean it off of! ;)

GO-JO WITHOUT pumice may work for you if its latex. Around here they use water based paint for painting road lines and thats what works for getting that stuff off.

Not sure what it will do to what's left of the finish, but Goof-Off works pretty well with the latex.

When I first saw this thread I was going to recommend "correction clay" it WILL remove just about anything that is stuck to the surface of shiny paint. But, it sounds like your paint is all shot anyway. If that is the case, sanding and painting is about all you can do.

Thank's for the replies guy's.

I took it to a body shop today. He said that the pore's of the paint were open, and nothing would stick to that paint. It would have to be stripped to bare metal. Does that sound right, or is he feeding me a line. He said $800 to do the whole top side of the car, and you would be able to tell the differance between the top and the side's because the shine would be differant. graemlins/sad.gif

Heck, I thought about a Maco paint job. What's one of those going for these day's.

Before I go with new paint, I want to try and buff it. What should I start with. Or do you guy's think it's a total waste of time.

Thank's,, Cal
