: Cortez Silver or Black for best re-sale
D Stroud Nov 13th, 06, 10:54 AM Hey fellows,
I finally got the body back on the restored chassis this week-end, and it looks like now I'm going to have to finally decide on what color to paint her.
The car is a '69 that has been cloned as an L78 SS. Not just a quickie badge clone, but a full restoration with all the correct parts.
Interior is Black.
If Silver, it will get the black SS Side stripe.
If Black, it will get a black ghost SS Stripe. I've done a test panel and it looks really killer with a little pearl added to the black for the stripes.
I have done a complete nuts and bolts, frame off restoration on her, and at this point the chassis and engine compartment looks better than brand new.
So, what color do you guys think will help it sale better Cortez Silver or Black? I had always planned on the Cortez Silver...But after seeing several black '69s at some of the shows this year....Now I'm torn between the two colors?
Which one do you guys think will sale better?
LevonH Nov 13th, 06, 10:56 AM Silver is easier to keep clean/shiny. Black is beautiful but much more work to keep up and the scratches ALWAYS show up :-) . Silver if the car has a black interior gets my vote.
RUQKENF Nov 13th, 06, 2:13 PM They only way I would go with black is if the car is very straight, black shows everything. Also, for selling the car you would probably have better luck not going with a ghost stripe if the rest of the car is original looking. I just painted my 69 cortez silver and I love it. I added 70s looking ss stripes in a metalic gray. The pics are in the link in my sig. If I was planning on selling the car I would have put the 69 side stripes on it in black. What is the original color?

68bye Nov 13th, 06, 4:01 PM Black looks mean, silver looks classy. His linky works finey! I had the exact same paint job on my 71 SS as 1badss's car. I loved it!
SS427Rick Nov 13th, 06, 4:24 PM This colour!
Keith Tedford Nov 13th, 06, 5:26 PM After 37 years, I'm partial to silver Chevelles with the black D96 side stripe.
savage71chevelless Nov 13th, 06, 5:30 PM i'm partial to the Nevada Silver on my 71 Super Sport instead of the 70 Cortez silver
OutCast Nov 13th, 06, 5:32 PM I love black, but it is like a full time job to keep on top of it.
For overall maintenance, lighter is always easier.
I would have to vote for the Cortez silver.
BTW, what years was it offered? Anybody know the paint code?
D Stroud Nov 13th, 06, 5:33 PM Thanks fellows,
Looks like Cortez Silver is going to be the color to go with. I have always planned that color but was temporarily awe struck by the Black. :D
Original color of the car was Glacier Blue.
yellow69rsz Nov 13th, 06, 7:37 PM Black as long as I don't have to clean it!
2cool Nov 13th, 06, 7:51 PM Why in the world would you do all that work just to turn around and sell it?
Black with silver strip
350_Malibu Nov 13th, 06, 11:12 PM Silver all the way
Black is nice, but shows every flaw.
bdss396 Nov 14th, 06, 7:52 AM Black! It's not any harder to take care of it if it's not a daily driver. I know, I have 2 black cars, both my toys.

Black with silver strip
Its what I do :).
I take old relics and bring em back to their former glory (or better :)). Then sell em and use the money to do another one. Its kinda like therapy for me.

mad hooker Nov 14th, 06, 12:14 PM thats how my elky was out of the factory, black interior with cortez silver paint. hmm these guys have good points. id say silver.
savage71chevelless Nov 14th, 06, 7:23 PM i believe Cortez silver was a 70 only color. Probably code 13. My 71 is Nevada Silver and that is code 13
2cool Nov 14th, 06, 7:58 PM I don't think so my 69 was silver with a black vinyl top.
RUQKENF Nov 15th, 06, 3:51 AM My 69 is code 69, cortez silver.
Tony
gotago Nov 15th, 06, 6:56 AM My 69 is cortez silver with a black top and no stripe. I think the stripe would be too much black with the black top.
Keith Tedford Nov 15th, 06, 8:39 AM Both of our '69 Chevelles came new with code 69 Cortez Silver.
cuisinartvette Nov 15th, 06, 12:01 PM Im a sucker for black cars, but Im guessing Silver would be the way to go. Anyone paying a lot of money for a car knows the pitfalls of black if its not cared for right.
Black does look mean, though. :clonk:

What does that mean? I would pay more for a black car than a silver one with hidden bad body work.
Pitfalls of black?
ak 67SD Nov 15th, 06, 1:59 PM Silver would certainly be easier to cover up flaws in workmanship compared to black, and is easier to keep clean, hides scratches better etc... but silver is really overdone the last few years! ...it might fall out of style quickly... black is the hottest looking colour when its clean, straight and polished... i think in terms of resale, if the body is straight then black. if not, definitely silver and ride the silver trend to a quick sale -which is the intent...

D Stroud Nov 16th, 06, 8:39 AM Here is a link to the latest photos of the car.
I'm very anal and detail minded, and try my best to make everything perfect. The body is already very straight, and I guarantee there will not be any flaws in the bodywork to cover up. She will be laser straight before any paint is applied.
Hmmmm, black would be really mean looking wouldn't it.

cliffs1970 Nov 16th, 06, 11:30 PM Black commands attention. jmho.

If the body is mint, nothing looks better than black. If theres questionable bodywork then Silver IMO is the way to go. Im just not the type to spend a ton of time taking care of black.
DougA Nov 17th, 06, 7:53 AM Black looks great if its done right, but I'm partial to Cortez Silver.
