Hey Guys, I just purchased a '68 Chevelle w/ a fresh 427. I am super excited. I took her on the highway for about 30 miles. When I was idling, I noticed white smoke from one side of the exhaust. Did I blow a head gasket? The oil looked clean, but the antifreeze was low. ANY SUGGESTIONS.

How fresh is the engine?

Timing and carb okay? Try a compression test.

take it to a decent shop that has a raditior tester for co2... they can tell if you've got head gasket leak ... could be anything ..blown gasket , cracked head or block, pull plugs & find which one or possibly two are leaking .. if you've only got one clean plug... odds are somethings cracked .... two clean plugs make it more likly a blown head gasket ... good luck

Welcome to the site. Please fill out the info so we know where you're from.
Could the smoke be something as simple as moisture in the exhaust?

Welcome aboard Travis
I would probably pull the heads and have them checked or do what 68KMENO suggested.

Yeah, I agree with Tim, Before you get all revved up, check the simple stuff first. You may be worrying about nothing.

Some companies don't run their mandrel bent exhaust pipes through a degreaser. The mandrel machine uses a LOT of fluid during the bending process. I'll bet there was some fluid in there that was burning off. Give it one more 1/2 hour run and I'll bet the white smoke will be gone.
