Looking thru ebay auctions, I see numerous mirrors that appear to be the same as 70-72 remote control Sport Mirror options on our beloved Chevelles. Some are Cutlass, GTO, Tempest, Buick GS, etc... could any of you guys make some sense of this for me? I had heard that the mirrors were the same, but the angle of the mounting base didn't match Chevelles, therefore the mirror would be at a funny angle. What say ya'll?

I'm 99% sure none af those mirrors interchange. The angle on the Chevelle doors are different...

What about a Lemans or a GTO? Doors look similar to me??????

The Chevelle doors have a flat" spot on the top of the doors where the mirrors are mounted. The other cars have the mirrors mounted on the vertical part of the door skin. This changes the angle of the mirror base so when it is mounted on the top of the door, the angle is wrong.
I'm not a GTO guy, but I think those door skins go all the way up to the glass vertical, and end. They don't have the flat spot the Chevelles have.
Look at the way there mounted on Camaro's and El Camino's . They are also mounted on the vertical part of the door. So they won't work either...Bill

Here is a recent discussion (http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=007443). But for god sake, don't buy repro. I promised Al to be nice about a mirror I bought at one place we all know. Real disappointment. Scope out

Greg,
There are no easy swap over for the mirrors. I've used 70-81 Camaro mirrors before and had to re-do the bottom angle. It's to much trouble to go thru. I have found that mirrors off of a 75-77 Nova ( or other X body car ) are very simular and also sit on the flat spot just like a 71-72 Chevelle. The angle is still off just a bit but can easily be corrected with only a little effort. You can also normally find them as a pair. The only problem with using the Camaro or the Nova mirror is the glass says " objects in mirror are farther than they appear". I'm not 100% sure the EXACT year span on the Novas but you get the picture. Good luck..
