I have a Husky 6.5hp 60 gallon compressor 220v. I wired it straight into my panel in my old house and the compressor was only about 25 feet away from the panel. Now i want to wire it in my new house. The panel is in the basement and on the other side of the house from where i want the compressor. I figure its a good 100ft run. What gauge wire should i use? Do i need bigger wire than the 12 guage i used before since its a longer run? Can i hardwire it or should i install a plug and outlet? Thanks.

what else you going to run down there ?? welder , small lathe , drill press if so you be better off with a sub box over there ... what ever you do check local codes you don't want problems with the Ins Co when they refuse any claim for falty wirring .......

Does it show the amperage draw? mine is on a 30 amp double pole breaker with #10 wire to a 30 amp receptacle. I think total amp draw is key in determining the length to size of wire.

6.5 hp - 220 V - 100' dedicated home run.
I would use 10-2 w/ground NM, a 30 amp double pole breaker.
Install a recep, don't hard wire it.

That compressor should draw about 25 amps or so. I would install a 30A breaker and run #10 that will only give you a 1% voltage drop  .

Thanks. Why not hard wire? Is it a convenience or a safety thing?

Its more of a convenience issue. If you were to hard wire you couldnt just use 10/2 romex you would have to go with a rubber cord or flex into a box mounted on the wall where you would splice the 10/2 and the cord/flex together. Much easier to just use a cord cap!

It says 15 amp on the compressor label. You still think it should be on a 30A breaker?

I would still use 10 ga/30 amp myself but you could use 12 ga/20 amp OK.
You might want to use that outlet to plug something else into some day.
