A 68 SS clone in only fair condition.
I have defended my desission by saying, no matter what I did to the Olds, It was still a 1983 Olds Cutlass. I don't have to do anything to this and it's a 68 Chevelle. It was an even swap, car for car. By the way, the 68 has been my dream car since I was 10. (24 years ago)
cliffs1970 Nov 9th, 06, 8:54 PM I can't see your pics but I wouldv'e traded for sure.
68bye Nov 9th, 06, 8:58 PM I'm still trying to work on that

This it?

You wouldn't be a fool in my book, but then I don't race.
cliffs1970 Nov 9th, 06, 9:08 PM I still would've traded! If you did the work on the Cutlass, I know that Chevelle will look awesome in just a short while.
68bye Nov 9th, 06, 9:09 PM Thanks Dean, yeah, that's them! I bought the Cutlass for $50 with a blown 231 V-6. I did all the tin work, motor, trans, rear, paint and body work. I started saving up parts for the Chevelle. The only thing staying on the car is the roof. I'm re-skinning the whole car so I can shoot it black. If it ain't right, it's wrong!:D
MrBill66Malibu Nov 9th, 06, 9:13 PM You are not a fool !!!!! You did what you wanted to make yourself happy. I would have done the same thing.!!!! To he77 with the nay sayers !!!! I like the 68, keep us posted on it's progress.
Bill
Ark68SS Nov 9th, 06, 10:11 PM You did the right thing. I traded my 9 sec '76 Nova for my '68 SS, & I'm happy I did it!:)

dreis454 Nov 10th, 06, 7:29 AM I also did the same thing.traded a 69 SS Nova that ran 10.20's for the car in my sig. The Nova sat for 3 years before I traded & now I have not missed it & am VERY glad I did it. I felt stupid for about 5 mins after the trade. (until the Nova was outa sight)
BAD415 Nov 10th, 06, 7:42 AM By all means trade. I would think of you as a fool not to.
What's the drag car going to look like when it's as old?
What would it be worth at that age?
What would it be worth returned to stock?
texaspilot180 Nov 10th, 06, 10:31 AM I don't see the problem with it. Your decision and your car. And Old's is an Old's (I've had them, have a 99 Olds Intrique I bought new as my daily driver), but a Chevelle, well, totally different and much better. You have lots of fun (work?) ahead with it, but I suspect you'll be happier with the Chevelle regardless.

midnightcaper Nov 10th, 06, 11:49 AM i would've in a heartbeat! hell i spent 2100 on a 65 rust bucket then drove 2100 miles to get it. lol (when a man knows what he wants there is no stopping him)
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 10th, 06, 2:46 PM Good trade, no question about it.
Wait a few years when you have the 'velle the way you really want it, those naysayers will be hiding in a corner somewhere.

Hope these pics worked. I traded (sold) my dirt late model for a 1964 Chevelle, it was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made! The Chevelle is gonna go through a full restoration---were shooting for the pro touring look, with 4 link rear, tubular front, tubbed, custom interior etc...I did keep the late model motor though! After some detuning it's bound for the Chevelle!
By the way the pic of the Chevelle looks much much better than it really is/was, it was pretty much a scabbed together basket case ex-drag car.
joeyv69ragtop Nov 10th, 06, 5:02 PM I think you made a good trade if it makes you happy. I personally have a soft spot for '83 cutlasses, but it's a personal thing. i certainly wouldn't trade my '69 for a cutlass, but i wouldn't trade an '83 cutlass for anything that's in the same condition as my '69. The only reason i still have the '69 is for personal reasons also.
plus when you drive around in the chevelle people look at your car for the WOW factor. can you drive the old on the street? probably not, but if you did it would get more attention on the street for WTF factor than WOW! just my $0.02
have a good weekend everyone.

obseSSed Nov 10th, 06, 5:21 PM Good Trade...LIVE THE DREAM!!! :beers:
OutCast Nov 10th, 06, 5:32 PM Whoever called you a fool is probably just jealous.
Only a fool would be rude enough to judge a guy on what constitutes his dream.
Follow your heart...if your 68 turns out 1/2 as good as your Olds, you won't be anybody's fool !!!
Good move.
John
allengator Nov 10th, 06, 6:07 PM I was called a fool in 1994 when I traded my 1972 450SL for my '66....
Sure the benz booked at a higher value at the time, but I wasnt happy!
I've NEVER regretted it!
Ricks70ss Nov 10th, 06, 6:23 PM your right. stand by your decision. theres an old quote: follow that dream!! I did. since its a done deal. why worry about it now. I think its a good deal. you both got what you wanted. now get to work on it. g o o d l u c k.
mad hooker Nov 10th, 06, 9:31 PM i would of traded, sure the olds was fast but the velle is better looking, a classic muscle car that will never loose how much its worth...and you could biuld up the velle to be as fast or faster than the cutty. good descision!
68bye Nov 10th, 06, 11:16 PM Hey thanks guys. I know I kinda stacked the deck asking this question on a Chevelle forum, but y'all's opinions are worth alot to me. The goal for the Chevelle is 1000 streetable horspower to hit the pavement. My friend did it with a 9 sec. Nova he drives everyday. 1250 hp to be exact. His car is legal to 7.50 and still has a heater, 4 speaker stereo, a back seat he can put the kids in, factory dash, headliner, carpet, etc, etc. I'm building a dual dominator 496 for the 'velle. I just need to locate a glide. I had a 400 in the Olds, and blew up 4 "bullitproof" trans'. I built them myself and the first two blew because I made my driveshaft 1" too long. The other two I flat out broke the cases. Quite spectacular, actually. (Nitrous passes) When the trans held together, I shredded the rear. It dyno'd at a little over 500 hp at the wheels on the juice. Anyway, The Chevelle will be pretty mean when I'm "done"
P.s. The Olds WAS street legal. As a matter of fact, it was very well mannered if you could keep your foot out of the throttle.
BLU69 Nov 14th, 06, 1:12 AM I would've traded also
