: Basecoat/Clearcoat Automotive Refinish Availability
Super70 Aug 15th, 00, 3:00 PM I'm making a lot of progress on my 70 SS this summer. Have done quite a bit of bodywork and car is just about completely covered with self-etch primer. Need to determine wthe availability of paint code 75 (cranberry red) and paint code 10 (classic white)for my stripes. I am planning a basecoat/clearcoat paint system. Does anyone have any specific paint brand recommendations (i.e., Dupont, PPG, Martin Sr., etc.). Any suggestions (and experience using this color) will help out greatly before I go out on a search around town.
MARTINSR Aug 15th, 00, 4:59 PM I believe both DuPont and PPG haave this color, but....It was computer matched and is not that close. The cost of hand matching is very high and it's usually limited to "new" cars, which is their core business. I know Martin-Senour does not have these old colors in BC/CC. One way to get a good match is to have the color made in enamel and then spray it out on a small panel, then bring it down to a Paint store and have it shot with a spectrometer. That is basiclly how Dupont and PPG got their colors, but you may get a better match. Ideally you have a piece of the original paint on the car, in the jams, under the cowl panel, etc, that you can match so you know it is as close to original as possable. Don't let some moron "convert" the single stage color, start with a two stage and match it, or just live with the computer match.

RC 70 Aug 16th, 00, 8:00 AM Super70, I too have a 70SS, red with white stripes. Is cranberry red with white stripes the original color of your car. If so, how do you know the stripe color is original? My documentation from GM of Canada shows that my car was (still is)code #75 Cranberry Red and had the option code for stripes (D88 I think), but didn't indicate the stripe color. The only reason I'm asking, I read somewhere that white stripes only came on cars with either a white vinyl or convertible top. Does your have either? Could you see evidence of the original stripes being white while sanding and doing your bodywork? BTW I happen to like the white stripes myself, especially at night. They really stand out.
I'm searching for a painter as we speak and am concerned with what Martin said about color matching. I too am going with a base coat/clear coat and wanted to use PPG. Good luck to you and keep us posted.
Super70 Aug 16th, 00, 9:14 AM I have already checked with NAPA to see if they have cranbery red in BC/CC. They only have single stage, so that idea is out. Never thought about the spectrometer matching part of your post. Better than computer matching? I have been using Martin Senour self-etch primer (great stuff) and need to figure out where I will get the BC/CC system in order to use the matching brand primers for paint compatibility. Thanks for you response MARTIN SR.
RC 70 - Cranberry red is the original color as are the white stripes. Original white stripes were on hood and decklid. I have build sheet (lucky me! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif) which identifies this and also my interior is Pearl(or Ivory as some call it)with bucket seats (code 791). Car was ordered with white vinyl top.
Will call local paint shops to determine availablity in Dupont, PPG, Sikkens, etc. and keep you informed.
John Michael Aug 16th, 00, 1:17 PM When shopping for which brand to use make sure you ask what size containers you can buy. Certain brands (like Sikkens I believe) you might only be able to buy in gallon quantities of certain things which is mighty inconvenient when working on a single project. A minor point but thought it might be worth considering.
I like PPG mostly because I have a helpful dealer and most stuff comes in quart sizes and is somewhat reasonably priced.
Chief Aug 22nd, 00, 3:55 PM You mean when I go to repaint my 66 SS396 Convertible I wont be able to get BC/CC in the original color? (Red) D#$mn the bad luck. Let's see. Mmmm... That guy at the cruise said he had 1966 Cadillac Fire Mist Red Candy over gold Base. Must have been a dream. Maybe thru House of Colors. $$$$$$
You might try a BASF/RM dealer. They had my color (69 Garnet Red) in BC/CC when no other brand did.

We use Glasurit in our shop, It's by BASF.
Code 75 cranberry red is available in their
55 line basecoat.
Most of all the other chevelle colors are available in basecoat also.
We get unbeleiveable color match with Glasurit.

JSL, What I used was in the Diamont line. How does that compare to Glasurit? Both by BASF.

70isfine Aug 24th, 00, 8:16 PM i think diamont is an acrylic enamel, like duponts centari.i went thru this on a 68 roadrunner i am restoring for a customer.the color was only available in enamel.i sprayed it out and used the spectramaster camera on it.not even close.tried sikkens and rm.no dice.ended up having a dupont rep mix it by hand.he took something close and played with it for 2 hours.pain in the ass.but it is a dead on match.
