I will speak of a 70 SS 454 M-22 crossmember. 70 M-22 crossmembers have built into it, The bracket to mount the M-22 Shifter and some shifter brackets that attach to the crossmember. Mine is a one owner and for 36 years I have been trying to get it to shift like a Hurst Shifter. So far it hasnt happened. It shifts O K. I pulled my stock shifter off in June of 70 and used a Hurst. Did a frame off a few years ago, went back to the stock shifter that has been setting 35 years. JMO it still sucks!!! I am not positive, But I think you can go Auto with a 22 crossmember. I would not chop up a 22 crossmember, Due to the fact there are guys like me, That may be doing a resto, and would love to have it. I am lookin for a 22 crossmember for my 70 El Camino. Thinking about changing it, Maby the mount on mine was off in the jig when it was built. Could be my skill factor or something else that keeps me from saying " I love my Muncie shifter " Bob

I have a 65 that was originally an auto.I am converting to a 4sp.To get the cross member under the trans. I had to jack up the trans until it was resting against the trans hump,no room to spare.I may see if I can take a little off the mount to gain some clearance.Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,as always you guys are very helpful.

I came across this but in a reverse way. I pulled my 327 and 4sp on my 64 and dropped in a 406 and TH350 trans.

When I went to put the auto trans in, using the new trans pad, it hit the tunnel. I compared the new trans pad with the old one used with my muncie and there was a difference in height.

Check the parts catalogs if they list two different cross members for your car. If there are two listed, chances are they are different.

-unless this is not a repro part!

The crossmembers for an auto and a manual trans are the same based on my past experience. I have done a couple of conversions and the cross member just needs to be moved on the frame in some cases. This really depends on the type of auto (400-350-PG) being replaced if I remember correctly. Do check for the transmount itself as they may be different. A good way is to go on-line at "The Zone" or some other auto parts store and compare part numbers for auto and manual trans mounts.

I used the same cross member on my 68 when I converted to manual. Seemed to work fine for me.
