Hello everyone. I'm excited to be on this site and eventually get to chat with people about the best thing in the world, "hotrodding". I'm a newbie and have enjoyed reading some of the archived forums. I do have one question, I have discovered what I believe to be a 427 engine, but not entirely sure. The casting number refers to either a 427 or 454. Is it possible to find out which one it is, and what horsepower rating it is? The casting # is 3963512, it is a 2 bolt main, and has hi-perf pass stamped all over it. But, I hear that they stamped that on all non-truck engines. It also has CONV on the back left side of bellhousing area near the casting number. The date is E27-9. I understand that is May 27, 1969. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,.......Wagonman65.

That early in 69 should be 427. Is there any numbers or letters on the pad on the front of the rh deck surface?

Since it is a May 1969 block and 2 bolt mains it would have been used for passenger cars (big chevys) or a Corvette. If it was in a passenger car it would be a 427-335 or a 427-390. If it was in a Corvette it would be a 427-390.

I will check the rh deck of the block this evening and post my findings. Thanks.

I was told originally it came out of a corvette, which it does have the original chrome valve covers on it, and the back left hand cover does have the slope to it as they say they did, but those could have been thrown on. I'd just like to know the hp rating. I'm guessing its between 390 -400 hp. At any rate, i think i got a really good deal on it.

Hello and welcome......69 ..427...ought to be a good motor if it's not broke...especially if it's a vette motor. How good of a deal did you get if you don't mind me asking?

Hello obseSSed, I must say I did indeed get a great deal. The deal I got was this 427 which was sworn to me it was out of a 69 vette which also came with a factory holley cast iron manifold, it is not broke, in fact it had new rings, bearings, and seals replaced 10 years ago, but was never fired since then. It isn't stuck either. I aquired a 402 BB, and a 454 BB, and a 327/300HP. All BB motors are good, the 327 needs new rings in a bad way. And the cherry of this great deal was the 65 chevelle 2 door wagon to boot. All for a great price, which was negotiated over for a few years.

You have a 512?? Did that start as a 427 and end up a 512?? What did you do to get that final number if you don't mind me asking??

As stated before, the Corvette version is rated at 390 hp. But you need to verify the codes stamped on the block.

My magic decoder ring tells me they used that casting number for all 69-71 427's. If you post the suffix code I can tell you exactly what you have.

LE 427/335 hp "chevrolet" with TH or automatic also as you can see it has 1969 vin and if that wasn't enough a 427 will have a tall or high distributor chute down to the cam gear in the block casting under the intake. looks like not from a corvette, sorry...

Thanks for the information, seems I have been duped! Oh well, if I have 335 to start with, I will be able to squeeze some more somehow. Thanks again John.

That suffix is for a 335 HP/427 full size Chevy (Caprice and Impala) as John mentioned.
Great block to work with.
Since a 427 and 454 share the same bore, you can go either.
Personally,I'd go with the 454

Corvettes also had a 400HP, 2-bolt version with the oval port tripower...

Did the Corvette (BB) EVER come with a cast iron intake? And did an oval port Corvette ever come with a Holley, after 1966???

I know on a '68 427/390HP Corvette we used to have, it had a low rise, aluminum "spread-bore" intake...

The intake manifold casting # is 3866948 j14-5 holley?? Obviously by the year, its not from a 69, but then from what??

looks like it's from a 66-67 396 325 / 360 hp. L-34 or L-35, or a 427 390hp. Holley equipped.
