: fender flares for 64
jamie Oct 19th, 03, 7:23 PM as most of you probably know, space is tight for rear tires on the 64 chevelles. i want to put some beefier tires in the back but i dont really want to tub it. i was going to roll the lip of the wheel opening but that wont make that much room and also, it turns out that there is bondo and rust that has weakened that part of the quarter. so i probably should cut out the rusted area and replace it.
so i started thinking about welding in some subtle fender flares if im going to be welding on it anyway. i saw a 55 with it done and it looked really tough.
has anyone ever heard of this being done and if so, how would i begin?
thanks,
jamie
tommy4111 Oct 20th, 03, 1:08 AM I saw a 65 at the cool april nights car show in Redding last april that this gal had the wheellwells raised up to almost the bodyline and it looked good. She had it done at a shop. You could graft some front wells on to the back lots of work though.
jocww Oct 20th, 03, 1:25 AM tommy u got pics
Cameano Oct 20th, 03, 2:44 AM My 64 El Camino has some '66 wheelwells grafted on, was like that when I bought it 15 years ago, and still is. Loads of room for my 29x12.50 Sportsmans on 15x10 Centerlines. Wheel pics (http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/shop/6451/wheels.html) If you want to enjoy some traction with your '64, it's well worth the effort, IMO. I don't worry much about originality with my car, it wasn't anywhere close when I bought it, and it's even farther now.
jamie Oct 20th, 03, 5:04 AM so you just find some 66 sitting around and cut out the wheel opening and weld it on huh?
that might work. i like what the cameano looks like.
anyone ever seen flares though?

Look at this 65, I think works well on the 64 & 65 for larger tires.

tommy4111 Oct 23rd, 03, 12:35 AM Wow small world Christines 65 Is the one I saw In Redding At the cruse and car show last april I forgot how nice of a job they did on it. The car show was rainy and windy But the The cruse was great. Does anyone know if the Rear inner wheelwell comes out the same as the fronts? Someones got mine hacked up and I see you can get repos. Thanks for the pictures, amazing how you can think something up and bingo theres a picture of it.
Bob Johnson Oct 24th, 03, 10:07 AM I think all they did was match the front with size opening and lip.
If I were going to do my 64, This is the way I would do it.

cperrell Oct 24th, 03, 1:29 PM That is really cool looking. I would love to do that to mine sometime in the future.
I hate to have to squeeze my tire out from behind that flap, plus it looks way better IMO.
So, they used a 66 front fender lip? Would any other years work?
How about patch panels? Are there any available for this area? I'd hate to cut up a good front fender just to get the fender lip off.
