: Chevelle now has a big brother

I just purchased a 1978 2wd shortbed chevy silverado pickup. It's a factory 454 (still has original engine) with factory bucket seats and console. The confusing thing to me was that it came with a turbo 350 (MX1) transmission. I thought that it would have the turbo 400 since it is a big block. I would like to do some research on this truck. Can anyone point me to a chevy pickup forum similar to Team Chevelle? Thanks!

Believe it goes to 99 chevy trucks despite the domain name

MX1 could be any automatic transmission depending on the engine ordered. In your case it would be a turbo 400 as it would be the only auto available with a 454 in'78. GM lists MX1 in my book as "merchandising option" which usually means the base auto trans for the engine. Hope this helps.

For 1978 the buckets switched to a high-back design, plus the woodgrain on the dash & doors was switched to a brushed metal look. That truck as a 1/2 ton with a 454 was only offered with the automatic, and gearing could go up to 3.73. The engine should be painted Corporate Blue if it is original.

Thanks for all the responses. The truck is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'll know for sure which trans it has in it then. It does have the high back bucket seats; I was able to verify that these are original via a picture of the option sticker in the glove box.

The truck arrived today and was actually better than I expected. It does have the turbo 400 trans. Thanks for the forum links; I will check them out.
