well, here i am back at it again. i primered my chevelle back in jan. of 2002. and i am sick and tired of looking at the primer, its time to shoot some paint graemlins/hurray.gif . only problem is that i have never prept a car for that. you can see some VERY SLIGHT rust coming through in a few spots and of course i have some oil marks up on the front fenders from working on taking the cars from a nasty 13.9 to a 12.9 1/4mile. my question is where to start and how to go about it. such as what grit of sand paper should i use for the second time around and when to start wet sanding and making final preperations. i know my moms husband sanded his 69 camaro 6 times!!!! i was hoping that 3 or 4 would do the job  but i give him some credit. the paint job on that thing was AWESOME!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif anyway, any info would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

First up before doing anything else, wash the whole car with dish washing soap, then go over it with a wax and grease remover, you have to get all traces of the oil off. Its very important, skipping this step will all but insure you grind oil into the substrate creating major paint problems.
Next you must address the rust however so slight, it will come back, sand until all traces are gone. Spot prime all bare metal areas, at a min.
Hard to say what grit paper to start with, depends on filler work blending, etc. if its all smooth 180-220, then 400,600. Take a look at the tech sheet for the topcoat you are using, it will recommend a final grit for max adhesion.
