Was doing some research and saw this site, I was looking for some advice. We are building a 32 Ford for my father and a 68 Camaro for myself and were thinking of cleaning out the garage. My father has a complete 396 block that he was told was a 425 horse motor. I got a block number of 3855962 which seems to be a Z16 motor. If this motor is a complete minus an oe intake, does anyone know what this is worth or where to maybe list it for sale? Was running when pulled and supposedly had new valves with a fresh bore and HP pistons.
Thanks for any and all advice!
Mike

First, The engine, in a Chevelle, is IDENTICAL to the "375HP" 396 engine. Fullzise cars and the '65 Corvette were rated at 425 HP, and "possibly" some early '66 Chevelles. Chevelles had different and supposedly more restrictive exhaust manifolds, accounting for much of the disparity in the numbers.

The Z16 was a 375 HP engine.

WHY do you think this is a Z16 engine? The 3855962 was used in 1965 (and 1966?) Fullsize cars (Impala, Biscayne, BelAir, etc with the 425HP/396 option, and (I think) the 1965 Corvette (396/425HP), as well as the '66 Chevelle 375 HP engines and an unknown number of '66 Chevelle 360HP engines...

The thing to do would be to look for the stamped engine sufix codes on the passenger-side front deck pad, and report those numbers back here to decipher it further...

Value? "Complete" except intake, and 'verifiably" in good condition (at least rebuildable), could be $2000-$12000+++ depending on who is looking, and just what the codes determine (date, original application, etc).

Get the cylinder haed casting numbers too...

I am actually not sure where the head casting numbers are. Maybe some guidance? As for numbers on the passenger side deck there are two, both are stamped with what looked like regular looking punches.

ones is

T04I3EG

and

K183218

And thank you for the reply!

Block used in 65 & 66 on 396 360hp, 375hp & 425hp; heads used in 66 on 427& 396 with 375hp & 425HP. EG suffix indicates a 66 chevelle 396, 375HPwith 4 sp. April 13, 1966. Kansas city chevelle. The 83,218th chevelle, elcamino built in Kansas City. You would want to check the date code on the block against the block pad. There might be a particial vin stamped on the block also. There should be date codes on the heads like D 15 6 (April 15, 1966), possibly 496, April 9 1966.

Where did you get the motor? How long ago?

Several years ago, I ran into a guy in Reno Nevada, selling a '55 Chevy station wagon with a '66 "EG" coded engine... He kept spouting off that it was a "Z16" engine, until I came by and, with a small crowd of bystanders watching, put him in his place by deciphering the code right there on the spot...

We got the motor around 1975, it was bought from a guy in moab utah and installed into a 72 gmc truck. It ran in there for a few years till a shortblock was installed, and it has sat in the garage since. We just dont have any use for it so I was hoping to find what we should do with it. I was looking at maybe listing it on ebay or an enthusiast site like here. Anyone know what we should ask for it? I think it has a stock bore but I need to check it.

Motor is a 1966 396/375HP out of a 66 chevelle SS, depending on bore of block and overall condition longblock is worth 2000-4000.......should list it in the for sale section or put it on ebay, U should have no problem selling it.
