I have the wierdest problem with a buddy's ride.

It starts ok when cold.

It won't start when normal operating temp unless you advance the crap out of the distributor. Then you have to back it off because you hear it detonating like crazy. And purs like a kitten when timing and carb are set and it is running. Turn it off, and won't start back up unless you advance the crap out of it.

I am thinking weak Coil. All else is new. Any suggestions?

Possible loose wire in the dist, I would go through the ignition system, check for spark before you advance the dist.

Thanks MrBill,

When I went over there to look at it, found weak spark from the coil. Sure enough, found a crack across the top, and the bottom was bulging. No fluid in the coil, just felt like something solid in it. I put on a spare pertronix coil, fired right up, I set timing, adjusted the carb, and it just purs. Barely touch the key, starts immediately. Went and bought him a new coil from Oreilly's (He was doing his Dad duties with his son at a football game), problem solved.
