: WHat is a 69 SS SHELL WORTH?
BORDERBUM Nov 2nd, 06, 12:38 PM There is a 69 Shell near me, white, but here is the bad;
No hood
no motor
rear end gone
front disk brake stuff gone
dash vin gone
lower rear window area needs replaced
rear quarters need replaced
dents etc
front fenders need dent work
trunk pan ok
cowl tag still there
Good doors
seats there....
floor looks good....but not 100% sure on this.
I know it is restorable but dang no original SS stuff, and would it be worth it in the end?? He's got other same era cars there so I could get it rolling with parts from them...
Is it worth it to bring it out of the salvage yard considering it dont have the SS Stuff on it? I just hate to see a true SS die when it can be restored(lot of work, but still not a terrible project)
What is it worth with nothing SS there? Thanks for the help!! Remy
rak1 Nov 2nd, 06, 12:56 PM Not very much would be my guess; I had a chance to buy a '69 Chevelle SS that still had the motor, trans, disc brakes, and rear end still intact for 4k at this years Hot August Nights this year. Everything was there including the console but she diffently needed work (rear quarters, and the engine was blown.) I would guess a shell would be about $500 or so.
Neal Wright Nov 2nd, 06, 12:57 PM No, definitely NOT worth it!
Check your state laws ... but that "dash VIN" missing is a big No No. Don't touch the car, don't even think of touching the car, don't even put your handprints on the car.
In reality ... with the VIN removed, you truely would have a hard time to title a vehicle. I believe in some states though, it's still a felony to even have the car in your possession.
As far as a '69SS ... with everything gone from the car, there would be no way to even guess that it was an original SS car. So don't fool yourself into that.

ANY car is restorable, just depends on how much YOU want to spend...
1) Car is in a "salvage" yard, so I assume that means it has/will have a "salvage" title... If thats so, then that will reduce the value alot, IMO...
2) Car is missing ALL the SS pieces. The cost of replacement parts can easily exceed the value, UNLESS its something really rare (L78, L89, COPO, etc).
3) Restoration costs can easily exceed the value of the car. Especially true if the car needs alot of work and is just a "basic" SS (see #2 above)... This is more true if you want top dollar, because then you will probably need to spend alot on the resto. The cars you see at Barret-Jackson, etc getting super high proices are mostly very high quality restorations... The "average" restored car won't bring as much money... You get what you pay for...
4) If its missing ALL the SS pieces, then it is probably missing any documentation to "Prove" its an SS. Even if YOU KNOW personally that the car is a "real SS", with everything being replaced, any (well, almost any) buyer will look at the car as a potential "clone". How could you prove to a potential buyer that the car IS a true SS? Proof enough to warrant a higher value? Again, alot of High-dollar cars also have significant documentation to support their heritage...
5) the missing dash VIN... If its in a salvage yard, they might have had to remove it. It might be okay, BUT as was said above, CHECK WITH YOUR STATE!!!.. Thats said, even if it is okay, it will recieve a "new" state issued VIN tag, and that will be a major detractor to ANY potential buyer. No one will touch it then, unless its a real bargain...
6) Why is it that important to save an SS? For 1969, the SS was an option. With that option gone (and all the HD pieces) and no documentation, then its really not worth any more than a "Malibu" shell...
7) I'd venture to guess its worth less money on the open market than the yard will sell it for...
This is one of those cars that might be "worth" it for YOU (but not monetarily) to restore IF you like the work, want to do it yourself, have little money to start with, and plan on keeping the car for a while...

exactly
Chris R Nov 3rd, 06, 3:30 AM With all the SS stuff gone. Its really just another Malibu in my opinion. After all, you would have to go out and get all the SS stuff again just to put it back the way it was anyways. I talked to a guy from a classified add that was selling a supposed SS bare shell for 1500 dollars. Just the shell, nothing else at all. I passed.
Chucks68SS Nov 3rd, 06, 9:02 AM Well I'm one of those guys that would buy a stripped SS to save it
and also bought one from the classified ads here on TC, you can see
it in my profile. Payed $1,500. and another $600. to get her shipped
to me. Its a roller needing a lot of work but its a true 68SS that has
the 138 in the vin & trim tag so it will be worth something someday.
Not for the faint of heart but what I do like is that I will break down
every panel & clean, replace and inspect things that might go unnoticed
if you bought with a fresh paint job and discovered rust coming thru
a year or two later.
But this one I would definitely pass on. No vin no deal, really for me I
wouldn't buy without the trim tag either. Salvage tag, no deal sorry.
And once you get years later that don't have the 138 codes paperwork
is about the only thing that makes them real and worth more than a nice clone.
