: Engine ID Number??

I have a 1972 Chevelle Malibu i'm getting ready for a total restore. I'm checking the engine ID number but I can't find anything on the suffix part of the number. Can anyone help me out on this? The number is: T0607C4J
I double and tripled checked this number and it is that number. The last letter is a "j" I have found a lot of numbers ending in "C4" BUT the last letter of "j" is no where to be found by me. Any and all info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If possible a link to the sight providing this would be great as well.

Does anyone know what size this engine is?? Or another way I can find out what the engine size is?? I'm new at all this and also, as you can see, quite new to this great chevelle sight. I hope this isn't a stupid question to break ingto the Team Chevelle Scene. :-) I'll probably be asking several other stupid questions as I venture into "Virgin Territory" Restoration!

First off welcome from another NC resident.

The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Are you sure maybe it's "C4U"....with part of the U not fully stamped as to look somewhat like a J?

C4U is the code for an '82 Chevy 267 V8 out of either an '82 Caprice or an '82 Monte. Does the engine feel like a real turd when you step on the pedal? :D

Can you get a casting number off the back of the block on the driver side top of the bell housing flange? This will help identify it a little better.

BTW here's the suffix codes that closely resemble what you have posted....scroll down to the C4 section....

The other possibility is that it just a "J" which is a 1964 283. You do need to post the casting numers, that will help figure it out.

Thanks for the help guys. Dawg, I have checked that sight as well and seen all the other C4 numbers. I ran out to the garage and checked the numbr several more times. I'm pretty sure it's a "j" I'll be pulling the engine out soon. This engine sure is a "TURD" I've been waching it sit under a bunch of trees for 16 years, fertilizing the shrubs. Finally I was able to get my hands on it after the owner's untimely demise. If it's all original, I'll definately consider rebuilding, if not, I'm selling it to the highest bidder and slammin a 396 or 454 in her. I'll check the casting number and post. Thanks again guys.

I meant "TURD" as in "no guts"....

If it's indeed a 267, you'd be better off dropping it in the lake somewhere.....nobody wants those engines....the crank I think is about the only thing worth anything...IIRC it's the same crank as a 350...

You could however save it (if it still runs) so in case you find a car/truck/van, etc with a 350/400 you want you do a swap, then resell the vehicle with a running 267 for maybe a little less than what you paid for it, meanwhile you still have your 350/400.

Definitley get those casting numbers and post them here....that'll really help out a little more.

i'm betting it's not a 4 in the middle. there's alot of suffix that start with c and end in j . check out www.chevymania.com parts i.d. section

Well guys, I finally pulled the engine. The casting number on the block is 460776. If anyone can help me out using this number, I would appreciate it. I'll do some searching on my own as well. Thanks again for all info

Well, I foud info on this.

Casting number 460776 -305CID 78-79 Pass,Malibu,Camaro,Nova, Monte Carlo
Sounds like not worth much keeping. Any thoughts on it? That 454 is lookin better and better.

The tranny in it is a 3 speed auto (at least the shifter says (L1-L2-D)
How can I find out what tranny this is? Numbers? Any ideas?

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas!

If the 305 runs you could sell it, though you aint gonna get much for it.

Or you could wait until you find a truck or car with a running 454 in it, then take it out and stick in the old 305 and resell the donor vehicle, meanswhile you now have traded a 305 for a 454.

On the trans, the 3 speeds could be:

TH200: square pan with corner cut off, 11 bolts hold it in place, "metric" is stamped in the pan; usually found in late 70's Novas and Malibu's; weak junk trans that should be avoided like the plague.

TH350: square pan with corner cut off, 12 bolts hold it in place, medium duty tranny that can be built tough with aftermarket parts. IMO a good all around tranny.

TH400: irregular shaped pan (sorta like the state of Texas), the beefy boy of 3 speeds, sturdy in stock form and can be built to be even sturdier, though uses a little more hp than a TH350....IMO perfect for drag racing.

Here's a link of the trans pan pics with more info:http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-transmission-identification.php

Thanks for the info Dawg. The engine hasn't seen life in 16 years that I know of from looking at it in the woods of my neighbors yard. I can easily turn the balancer, but haven't yet looked to see if anything is moving inside. LOL If I can't get much for it running, then I'll settle for what the junk yard gives me I guess. The tranny is a 12 bolt. So according to the info and the sight you provided, I have a a TH350. Thanks for that info. I'm seriously leaning toward putting a 454 (crate) in her, even though a 350/380 HP (crate) engine is not out of the question. It's going to be a street car, so beefing up the 350 should be good enough. Your thoughts on this? Converter preference? Thanks again.

For a street car you could probably get away with leaving the trans stock. If you plan to do holeshots at the VHT prepped track with sticky Mickeys you might want to beef it up or even better go for a TH400.

My Chevelle has a torquey 402 in front of a stock TH350 with no problems. Then again I haven't really put it to the test at the track.....yet.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea however to have a trans guy go thru the trans especially if the car has been sitting this long.

Either 454 or 350 will be good. I kinda think the 454 would be worth more the effort but then again if the 305 that's in the car is complete you could get the GMPP 290hp/326 tq 350 that sells for like $1500....then use the intake/carb/ignition/exaust/alternator/starter, etc off the 305......then do whatever you wanted to with the 305....give it away....drop it in a lake.....give it to some kid to put on his go-cart.:D

As for the 305 I don't know if the boneyard would even give much for it if anything at all...if you can get it running without spending too much money it might be worth hanging onto until you find a donor vehicle with the engine you want, then do a 1 for 1 swap and resell the donor vehicle with a running 305...

For a converter most recommend a custom converter from Coan or Art Carr as they build it right to your engine/car's specifications....I';ve got a Hughes converter in my car....so far it's ok but I have no other experience with aftermarket converters other than this one.....
