68bye Nov 2nd, 06, 12:37 PM It looks like a real nice driver, I've sold nicer cars for less, however, I've bought worse cars for more. I'd offer him $5,500, he can only say no. It's worth a shot.
Pro68Camaro Nov 2nd, 06, 2:44 PM I'd agree with the $5,500. I bought an 82k mile '72 grannymobile (2dr) that was similarly kept for $5,000. With some elbow grease under the hood, freshening of suspension, disc brake swap, and new wheels it is an awesome driver. My lucky kid has the coolest car at school. Wish I'd had one like it.
fast71ss Nov 2nd, 06, 5:09 PM Thats not a bad price at all if its passing emmissions tests. That means it runs well and the rings are still good. I paid $2500 for mine with less of a motor, no paint or interior, and a bent frame. My neighbor just got a 71 'vert', minus motor and trans, that had been hit in the rear and needs a full resto for $4800. Plus, this guy already did a overdrive transmission swap, which aint a bad thing to have if u wanna save on some gas.
Blown 70 Nov 2nd, 06, 6:00 PM I would have to see it in person, those have to be some of the worst "for sale" pictures I have ever seen.
If it runs good why would you not pull it out of the garage to take pictures ???
Something is fishy :(
and what is a 200R trans, is that like a 700R4 ???
DougA Nov 2nd, 06, 8:33 PM Thats what I thought, why not pull it out of the garage, clean it up a little ,then take some pictures, weird.
blue70chevelle Nov 3rd, 06, 9:08 AM and what is a 200R trans, is that like a 700R4 ???
They are the four speed little brother of the 700R4 that came stock in late model G-body cars of the 80's. The Grand National got'em and so did the Monte SS, and so on and so forth.. They were a bit more performance oriented in that they didn't have that crazy 1st to 2nd gear drop off.. 3.xxx to 1.xxx in a 700R, what were they thinking??

Thanks Blue !
I had seen it in different discriptions, and never knew exactly what it was?
So it is a more performance oriented 4 speed auto (closer geared)
Is it about the same strength as the as the 700 ?
blue70chevelle Nov 4th, 06, 1:11 PM a lot of people build 700R4 for street cars that get driven whereas more people that want an overdrive unit with performance in mind tend to build a 2004R. Personally I wouldn't bolt a 200 to a BB though, I would only bolt a 700 to one.
200-4R
Around 1980, GM's Hydramatic division decided to incorporate an overdrive gear, and using the THM200 as a base, the Hydramatic 200-4R was born. Internally, the components which were prone to failure in the THM200 were improved, and this transmission was used with high-power applications - primarily the Buick Grand National. GMs powered with the Oldsmobile 5.7L Diesel powerplant were coupled with the 200-4R in place of the 200.
Unlike the 700R4, the 200-4R has a multicase bellhousing for use with Chevrolet and Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Cadillac (BOP) powerplants. Since the external dimensions are similar to the THM400/3L80, 200-4Rs are usually swapped in place of THM400s in older vehicles.
The THM200-4R was phased out after 1990 - its final usage was in the GM B-body lineup (Chevrolet Caprice, Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon, Cadillac Brougham) coupled to either a Chevrolet 305 or an Oldsmobile 307 engine. It is believed that a HD version of the 200-4R was used in the late 80s Caprice 9C1 police package using the internals from the Buick Grand National.
700R4 / 4L60
At approximately the same time as the 200-4R's release, the Hydramatic 700R4 was introduced 1982 for use in Chevrolet/GMC vehicles.
The gearing for the 700 is (commonly rounded off to 3.06, 1.63, 1.00, 0.70, and 2.29):
First - 3.059
Second - 1.625
Third - 1.000
Fourth - 0.696
Reverse - 2.294
blue70chevelle Nov 4th, 06, 1:14 PM so in summation:
200-4R
1st 2.74
2nd 1.57
3rd 1.0
4th 0.67
700R4
1st 3.06
2nd 1.62
3rd 1.00
4th 0.70
fast71ss Nov 5th, 06, 4:34 PM Either way, it still has a overdrive. Maybe it was night-time and the photos were taken under the glow of incandescent lamp light.
Edit:
Haha, nevermind. I saw the one picture with the door wide open and the red ford and palm trees outside. You could ask for outside pics, or pics somewhere that it would need to be driven to, or just test drive before buying.
sarge1991 Nov 5th, 06, 8:42 PM thanks for the info guys. We went and drove the car yesterday and didn't seem to have any problems. I have more pictures if anyone would like to see.
Junkyard Dawg Nov 6th, 06, 3:58 AM I'd take a 200 4R over a 700 R4 anyday.
They need better pics of the car, prefferbly ones of it cleaned and outdoors. My insticts say they're hiding something...

DING DING DING ... We have a winner !!!!
The people selling the car on Ebay are the sister & brother-inlaw of the actual owner.
There is a lean on it and they owe 6,600 and they say that is their bottom line. (some people have never heard of negative equity)
The car has now been returned to the actual owner (south Phoenix)
I spoke to the cars owner, who told much more about the car than the ad.
Apparently the paint job is not so good, either a home spray or earl shribe type of job. Says it would definetly need paint. She also said there is bondo waves on the sides of the car, which is especially visable on the doors.
Said the car runs "ok, but could use some work like all old cars"
I guess several people have looked at the car but no buyers, For me it didnt sound worth my time to go look at.
