Does anyone have any good tips on painting the frame with POR-15. I'm having it sandblasted this weekend and have one day to put as many coats on as possible. How long should you let POR-15 dry before applying classiscoat black top coat? Should I use a foam brush or foam rollers?
thanks

I have used a lot of POR and here's some things I learned along the way.

I used 1" brushes, but a narrow foam roller might work.

Foam brushes tear up quick.

Prep your area by laying down plastic, etc. and removing anything you can trip on.

Pick up a box of disposable gloves. It's easier to throw them away than to scrub POR off your skin.

Wear a long sleeve shirt.

Open the can, pour a small amount into a clean metal can, and cover the top of the POR can with cling wrap.

Start brushing it on in the hardest to reach areas first (like work inside-to-outside).

I work the 2nd coat before the 1st coat is tack free.

Leave the cling-wrap over the POR can when you replace the lid.

Don't tip the POR can over, it will make a 3 foot puddle (I found out sitting 2 feet from the over-turned can) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

I believe you can use POR Chassis black after the POR is tackfree.

Sand blasting leaves a rough surface, I have used POR-15 Silver on sand blasted surfaces then followed up with POR black for 2nd coat. Looked really smooth and you can tell where 1st and 2nd coat left off. Silver doesn't go as far tho.

Some addition tips I've learned: Laquer thinner will remove POR from skin if the POR is not completely dry. And DO NOT put the second coat of Chassis Coat black on before the first coat is COMPLETELY dry (about 24 hr min) or it will look like sh--.

Foam rollers (not the fuzzy ones which leave fuzz behind http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif ) the rollers leave a slight orange peel when first applied then it levels out.

Another tip; ventilation!

dont even mess with foam stuff. just use a cheap 1" brush. have several on hand. use acetone to clean up. it will take it off of your skin if you wipe it off within a minute or 2. i wear latex gloves, the kind you can steel from your doctors office http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif. if you start at one end you can apply the next coat back where you began by the time you get to the other end. no need to wait. it actually bonds much better if it is still tacky rather then allow it to completely dry and set up seperat layers. they could seperat. nothing stickes to por sometimes not even itself. oh and keep your damn dog away from it !! mine walked next to mine and got its hair all stuck in it http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif yeah its funny now! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

POR 15 needs humidity to dry. If relative humidity is low that day run a hose over the floor you're painting above. I think their web site has more tips

Once you open POR 15 shelf life isn’t very long. I never open the lid unless you know you are going to use the whole can.

I drill two holes in the lid so it will pour out. Then I put screws in the holes and seal with silicone an store upside down. If it should skin over it’s on the bottom when you turn the can over to use again.

Everything everyone has said here is right on the money but two small detail's were left out.

1) Make sure that there is absolutely no grease, oil or other residue on the frame and it's component's. Sandblasting alone will not remove that stuff.

2) Be sure to use metal ready on the frame. Do this by mixing it down per the instruction's and applying it to the steel. To make life easier, use paper towel and wet it with the metal ready. Then lay the paper towel on the metal and allow to stay wet for 15 minutes. To keep the paper towel damp, use a garden variety spray bottle and mist the paper every 5 minutes or so. Dispose of the spray bottle when you are done because it will be contaminated and should not be used for anything else. Ther metal ready will promote better adhesion to the raw steel. Be sure to rinse everything off as per the instructions and ensure that all the metal is as dry as it can get. POR & Water don't mix when painting it.

Hope it Helps.

The humity for the next few days will stay at around 35%. Is that enough? This is the first I've heard of putting water down on the floor to help with the curing process. If I don't put water down, will it just take longer to dry or will I run into other problems. How long should I wait before applying Chassiscoat black?

I did my 67 frame with 2 six packs of 2 oz. cups of POR-15. This way you can use up the cup that you open and not waste it. Another important fact that the member did not tell you is that. you need to top coat the POR-15 with another paint. The Por-15 does not do well in ultra-volent light.

Mini foam rollers will be 10 times faster than a 1 inch brush and the results look like it was sprayed. The mini foam rollers will leave a zillion bubbles at first. These roll out as the POR 15 starts to "tack". I have used several quarts of POR 15 on 3 vehicles and the foam rollers are by far the fastest and easiest way to apply POR 15.

Thanks for all the tips. We finished sandblasting and painted the first coat in one day. With the two of use with brushes it took us two hours. When I go with Chassiscoat black I will most likely use foam rollers for the frame and brushes for the suspension. I used screws in the top instead of opening the can, worked really well. Will post pictures in the next few days. thanks again.
