: What parts are still available from Chevrolet?

This may have been posted before but I haven't seen it and it would be nice to know what I can go to the Chevrolet dealer and get. Maybe a list could be started on here by year so we could go look and get a part number to go to our Chevrolet dealer parts guy with. And it would be nice to be able to print that list also. I know the lower steering column bearing for a '66 Malibu is still availabe, I just got one. I don't have access to the number right now but I will post it when I get home.

go to gmpartsdirect.com & go through the list for your car. That is the best source for GM parts IMO.

You can also post hre with original numbers that they dont show. Sometimes GM changes the part number. Aalso, GM Parts direct is only albe to show you what's still available in the warehouse system. There's at least one GM partsman who watches this daily during the week and may possibly do a dealer search is you provided the part number and ask nicely.

I ordered from GM parts direct and did recieve my parts yesterday, but it took 12 days, mostly because they didn't ship them for a week (I emailed them for a tracking # and amazingly were shipped twenty minutes later). Is this normal for them or did I just catch them on a bad day? I got a great price and it was no big deal on the delay this time, but just wondering for future referance if I need something quick.

I can't say for sure, but they are just a GM dealer. They probably didn't have it on-hand, and had to order it which can take several days. If you need something quicker, take the part numebr to your local GM dealer and see f they can help. They can always overnight it for you, which would save a few days.

I've found that some parts counter guys either don't have the old parts books any more or are too lazy to look things up. I have two excellent guys at Lindsay Pontiac, Lindsay, Ontario. If it is available, they will find it. Many of the parts available are superceding part numbers. This means that they will work but are a part from some other car application. The big block upper rad hose with the big dogs leg is a good example. I believe it was for a full size Chev with a 350. Not even close to what came on our Chevelle in '69 but it will work. Make sure of what you are actually getting. Parts usually come next day and there are no shipping charges. If the parts come from a warehouse far away, then it might take a little longer.

Actually, part number changes are when GM changes some characteristic of the part, so they cannot accurately call it the same number. Oftentimes, they will be so close to another part, that they will consolidate the numbers into one, though it will not be exact. It also can be due to something as trivial as an extra hole, including/deleting additional parts that were part of a kit, or some other reason. Oftentimes, there are parts that will fit many applications, but will only have different part numbers if they are physically different somehow.

Keith-sounds like you have some keepers for parts guys up there in the colder than us area. They know what will work, though it may not be concours correct-still probably better than the aftermarket.

Part number changes signify any one of many changes. The number changes so they can track the item. An original part# could be an assembly that is now broken down into components, or a disign change (significant or minor). Number changes can also track vender changes. I happen to have the parts book for 64-74 chevy cars. If the dealer has the books thats great. If not they are not reproduced and can't be replaced. The old books are written differently than todays computer catalogs. The groups are still pretty much the same but the wording and descriptions are different. They also had an seperate book for illistrations. I wish I had that book, Been looking for years now and the best I got is an assembly manuel and crash book.

gmpartsdirect is a cleaver name for a web sight for a dealer. (Flow Chevrolet as I understand). If the item is availible to the dealers though gmspo delivery times depend on the location of the dealer and the distance of the stocking pdc (parts distribution center). Lansing Michigan has most the slow moving items, similar to a grave yard. Not all PDC's offer overnight service.

I like the fact that gmpartsdirect has stepped up and have an online catalog. The GM catalogs are copy writed and can't be displayed or reprinted.

Thats enough for now

Gmpartsdirect is Flow chevrolet. They got into the muscle car repo part business many years ago. I don't know if they still do it. Be careful when you call the parts "still available from GM". They are not necessarily NOS parts. They may be repopped parts under the GM license. And be careful of parts that may have supersceded old parts. For example, you may be able to get head bolts for your BB. However, these are the stretch bolts and do not have the same markings as your originals. They will work but they dont look right. Wish they would get some more pics up and their search engine is not that great.

lansing is bad, they have 48 hours to ship out your part(they call it 48 hours standard of service)and they use all 48 of them.also they are a packaging plant which means they get raw parts ,box them up and send them out to other pdc's.most of the time if parts come from there they are in a bag or a shipping box.

For the GM parts catalogs, try searching the evil ebay. I picked up a Chevy line parts catalog on disc for the pre-1975, as well as a 1967-1981 Pontiac line disc. Each was under $20 after shipping, and is essentially a scanned copy of the parts catalog. They're done in Adobe, and can't be printed or searched, but there's an index in front of each section to help those not familiar. It also has the illustration pages on there as well. You will also want to know the GM parts terminology is a little different than the technitians or laymans.

The pontiac one is even broken down into just F-body and just 67-69, 67-76 sections.

So if one searches the Gmpartsdirect website catalog, are these actually GM parts when the part number matches up, or are they repops that just use the same number?

Actual Gm parts.

Bowtie-72

Actual Gm parts.

Some dealers will stock aftermarket/repop parts as the GM number to make it easier for themselves to inventory. This way when they look up the original part number it will come up.

We always added an X or a dash or something as well as made a note in the inventory screen to show it was not OEM.

I personally like www.partszoneonline.com ... they are a small town Chevy dealer in Slovan, PA. They offer prices very close to those of GM parts direct, however they charge actual shipping not an expensive flat rate for the parts they sell.

Their number is 1.888.870.0280 x214. The parts manager's name is Bill ... tell him that Bryan Shook referred you, they'll take care of you. I know them personally and used to live just minutes from them.

I ask about the original part or repop, because one can go out to eBay and see a good number of those parts listed as NOS and folks are buying them for 10x the price they list for.

Are they ignorant or is GMPartsDirect actually selling a repop?

(1970 Exhaust tips for example...)

You would have to email them directly. That's the bad part about blind ordering off the net. To be sure of what you're getting, it's best to talk to them directly. I didn't find a phoe number, just the link on thier site to email.

I just want to chime in on chevrolet parts counter people.
I agree that most suck. They are either to lazy or do not have a clue as to look up the parts that are not in the computer.
There is hope. Just have to find the older parts guys. My brother works at a chevy dealership. I found a parts guy that has been working there for 20 years. Not only can he use the other systems to look up parts (books, microfiche), but he also remembers the parts and thier numbers when new. I can only get parts when he is working, as even the parts manager does not know how to find the older parts. This guy was so nice that he gave me older GM parts books and lets me scan through the microfiche they have. They are very valuable because they ofter have parts blowups and diagrams. I also make parts ordering easier because I often look the #s up beforehand to make it easier on them. Do what Bowtie-72 did and buy a GM parts catalog off ebay. They are what the dealership had back in the day. Very helpful. You can also score old microfiche parts catalogs on ebay and go to the public library to use the mircofiche reader. They are the same, just in different format.
The key is to catch them when they are not busy. Show them pics of the car your working on. Most people working in the dealership have some sort of gearhead spirit in them. Get them interested and that they are helping you preserve american history. Most of the time they had some sort of musclecar and will start telling you stories about them racing it or something.
Good luck

DN

dittoz, yes Gm parts direct are Gm parts. They may not be OEM, but licenced by GM. I think some ebay sellers are buying from places like this and selling them as NOS. I laugh everytime I see an "NOS" part on ebay with a bar code on the box.

go to gmpartsdirect.com & go through the list for your car. That is the best source for GM parts IMO.

I went to gmpartsdirect.com and their parts search only goes back to 1973. I have a 1966 Chevelle. So once again I say, why don't we get a list together, by year, of parts still available from GM. Okay, they maybe repops but so are the ones that you buy from Year One, GroundUp, OPGI and so on. If we knew what we could get from GM, at least you are saving the sometimes outrageous shipping costs. With the price of restoring our beloved Chevelles these days, every penny counts for us middle class guys who can't afford to pay ridiculous prices and drop the car off at a shop and have them call us when it is done like most of the magazine cars.

meb
Nov 4th, 06, 6:37 PM
Ditto I have to agree with DN. You really need to be careful. Some of the "NOS" parts and "Licensed" parts will NOT match your original parts and you'll end up not using them (if you are doing a correct restoration). A good example are the hood stops that are "licensed", they don't match my 70 Chevelle at all. Sure they will work, but they are not correct.

http://www.partsvoice.com is another source I use often. Login as a guest user with your zip code only and you can do a search with a GM part number and find any dealer that may have it in stock. http://1964-77chevelleparts.com/ is another good source I've found.

I think to try and keep a list of parts still available would be overwhelming. A good CD like those from Detroit Iron are a handy reference. It has a copy of the Chevrolet Parts & Accessory Catalog, circa 1971, that has a lot of original and service replacement part numbers current as of the publication's date. Not hard to use once you get used to GM's terminology for parts.

I think the list from 1badss396 is very helpful. If more people put lists similar on a Parts forum, it would benefit all of us.

I have some part numbers that I will check next week to see if they are still good. If so, I will post them.

The hard part is that GM puts out a discontinued list WEEKLY, and to keep up is very hard. They do not state what the parts fit, just the part number. I gave up trying to nab this stuff while it was still avalable just due to price-they don't discount it either.

Your local GM delaer's computers will probably only go back to 1976 unless they also subscribe to special additions. Ours goes to 76 on all, except for trucks which is '73, and Vettes which is 1953. Even then, the computer is less than helpful in most cases. The books are better.

Ricks70SS- Sorry-not me. If you walked in, you'd never see me. I work with the techs in the shop, and kinda prefer it. I get to keep up to date with the current technology, and even get a little hands-on experience in the new stuff. I'm plenty young enough to need to know it for the future generation, but a gear head enough to dip into the older stuff as I need to. Luckily there will always be a need to fix cars, so hopefully I'll always have a job.:hurray:
