: 454 car or not
tmmydzr Oct 31st, 06, 10:19 PM i have a 1971 chevelle ss with 454 emblems but with a 350 motor just purchased it has the tranmission switch above the gas pedal. turbo 400 tranny not to believed to be orginal this switch seems to be the same switch for the cowl induction and the transmission why? we are trying to find out if this is a true 454 car hood not orginal to our car no fuctional cowl
Chris R Nov 1st, 06, 1:29 AM Has the car ever been completely apart before that you can tell? Aside from the hood and 350 engine being replaced? A build sheet is the only thing you can really use to determine a true 454 car. If it were 72, a 5th digit in the VIN showing W would be the determining factor.
mmurphy77 Nov 1st, 06, 9:50 AM The switch on the the gas pedal was used for the TH400 kickdown switch as well as for the cowl flapper activation. If car has a TH400 then the switch will be there regardless of hood type.
EdCarpenter Nov 1st, 06, 10:04 AM Similar to the 1970, does the steering shaft have the bolted flange for the rag joint = BB. Pressed flange = SB
tmmydzr Nov 1st, 06, 2:12 PM thanks for the info the car does have a bolted on rag joint

I thought that only was accurate until 1969? I thought that 70-72 are all the same.

my 72 chevelle has the same as my friends 71 malibu.
also in 70-72 all big block cars heater core lines were moved away from the motor. they are moved to the right(passanger side), and small blocks are tucked up closer to the motor. 70-72 big block cars all have disc brakes in the front. you could look at the paint code to see if there was a second. this would mean it had the stripes(all ss did not come with stripes), and non ss were never offered with stipes(painted on by dealers so no 2nd paint code)
these are somthings you could look for. hope this helps aittle.

jamie:beers:The big blocks still got the BOLTED rag joints in 70. The heater hoses were NEVER moved to the outside on 70-72s either.
Be careful about info you get, double check to make sure you are getting the true story.

Thanks for keeping the record straight Ron.
someone must have compared a non A/C car with a factory A/C car maybe
I'm not sure but I *think* some non SS cas did come with stripes from the factory also.
BlueSS454 Nov 2nd, 06, 7:34 AM There is also NO PAINT CODE on the body plate for the stripe color either. A second paint code denotes upper/lower body color.
