Now that my pinion angle problems are solved I have a question for you rear end lovers (pun intended).

I had 3.73 gears installed by a reputable shop in Santa Clara and then rechecked during the pinion angle wars. When they put the new gear set in the car they used gears from Malaysia because they were out of domestic brands in a GM 3.73, but they assured me the Malaysian gears were fine (if so, why did they bring it up). With these new gears came an audable but not real loud whine from 40 to 45 MPH. The rear end shop drove my car and said the whine was normal and that only original equipment gears were well enough built that you wouldn't hear anything. The shop owner said that all after-market gears will make noise at 40 MPH.

I don't want to make a big deal out of it but that explaination does not seem reasonable to me. Is he correct or just trying to avoid a "do over"?

Thanks for the input.
Chuck

Sorry Im a rear lover. You shouldnt hear a whine. I used to get a slight whistle/whine, but it was very quite and was new rear, now it is silent. I wish I knew how loud yours really was. Perhaps put about 100 miles on it? I dont know, wait for some more input, but you shouldnt really hear a whine. That sounds kinda bad to me.

I have only had a few gear sets that made any noise at all. Most are quiet when set up correctly. Sometimes you get a gear that is not cut just right and it will make noise no matter how you set it up, but those are rare.

i always heard growing up if you tightened the pinion to tight and the crush collar crushed too much it would wine ,so it was very important to torque it correctly

Thanks Johnny, but remember that in my original post, this was done by a professional and it only whines between 40 and 45. This isn't a home installation. I am trying to determine if this can be a normal condition in a properly set up rear end...or am I getting let astray.

Thanks everybody
