Nice looking car, but to say it's a true 454 SS when the vin decodes what... a 307??

I'll bet either he bought this car from someone already restored and "thinks" it's an SS 454 (because it says "SS' on the side and maybe there's a 454 under the hood....although no pics of the engine are avaliable???) or like you guess he's looking to pass it off as the real Mc Coy and forgot to put the correct engine code in the vin....

Looks like his wife in the passenger seat in the overview pic of the interior. :p

besides the vin. the dash is even incorrect for a '72 (no seatbelt light near the cig. lighter)

You have a good eye my friend, I wasn't even looking for that.....

I wonder if I were to put SS badges on a Vega and list it on ebay as a rare limited edition car....how many would fall for it? :D I'd even put in a 350 just to add a little class to it.

how much do you think your ss vega will bring? is it the earlier model with coswell cogs or the revised bad boy with the hd spacely sprockets?

It's the factory V8 version/4 speed version, not the jury-wrigged half done job in the mobile home park drive way by Skoal dippin mullet wearing Joe in a Def Leppard wife beater shirt...

Someone spent $65K on a restoration and didnt get a radio? I bet they would like to have all that money back. Well there was "NO EXPENSE SPARED", perhaps it is a radio & radio delete panel delete.

that VIN is for a 71 ford made in dearborn. 1 = 1971 F=Dearborn 67 is the body style ( i can't determine) rest i am not sure of, doesn't follow ford order correctly.

I think it is a scam auction! I looked at the seller's feedback and there has been no activity since Sept. 03! It would be easy to steal an ID. when it hasn't been used in a long time.

F = 307 130hp, 2v carb.

I know this has been discussed on here before and I beleive that it was not possible to get a 307 SS in 72. I think the rule was only OPTIONAL V8 engines were available with the SS package.

Dash is aftermarket SS (4 small circles are trimmed with silver).

LateNight72

The seatbelt light showed up in Nov. of 1971.

54XXXX sequence numbers were early Nov of 1971 in baltimore. So the 50XXXX vin of this car, would have been before the dash was implimented.

I was going to ask about the true big block thing and the vin showing a 307 but since thats been done and he thinks he has a big block car I didn't. I did ask for better pictures and some under hood pictures. His reply was that it has chrome goodies,1600watt stereo, new glass, wiring and now he has over 68k invested. I feel sorry for who ever pays to much money for a 307 car and thinks they getting and 454 car,but if I was going to spend that much money I would research it better.:clonk:

Ha-ha that's funny....you know they did have an X-11 version that had a HI-PO 2.8litre   and the domed hood....could add the hood to the car just for splash and dash....someone would surely fall for it....

I just sent an e-mail to the e-bay security center....see what happens, it's probably too late. I was one of those dopes that didn't do their homework with my first ride and got somewhat boned! I had no clue about the relavance of VIN's and SS's back then....it had shiney SS badges, it must be one. It too was a '72 was an "F" code SS!

As for the seatbelt light everyone I do believe in mid year they started the seatbelt warning stuff I have got a hold of w code 72 with no light in the dash and got another parts car 72 which did have the wires and light in dash correct me if I'm wrong but there could have been a midyear production change. As for the vin someone should email him and clear his story don't you think?

Actually I did & took it as new info that I did not know. thanx:thumbsup:
since my car was built in June of 72 it DOES have the s/b warning light. I have never seen a 72 without it so I thought they ALL had them. btw do non SS sweep dashes have them? I usually don't even look at them so I have never noticed.

LateNight72
Nov 8th, 06, 12:07 PM
Oh, I figured someone looked at it, just busting some balls.. :hurray:

I don't believe the sweep dashes had them, if they did they would be in the cluster. It's pretty weird too, my early Nov. '72 has the dash and light, but the wiring and belts are standard (non warning).

dreis454
Nov 17th, 06, 9:33 AM
I will not argue with that guy. I told him once that the car
A. was an orginal 307 car
B. was most likely NOT an SS since no 307 SS cars have ever been verifyed.
I also told him that after all the research I have done on '72 SS cars, that I consider myself an expert on the 1972 model year (although I don't claim to know everything) but I pretty much know I know more than him.

chevguy65
Nov 17th, 06, 10:42 AM
I sent him the link to ACES and told him this is where REAL Chevelle owners are and that REALLY know about these things.

I see he changed his ad to say True covertible SS instead of True 454 SS, still a lie.

I have read and read on this subject and nowhere has it EVER been verified that a 307 SS was EVER built. the only ones were 350, 402 and 454 if memory serves me correctly and you could not get the 350 SS in California.

Thats exactly what will happen. Someone without a clue, doing no research at all, will believe what they are told about it, buy it for big bucks, then decide to flip this very rare and special car for a profit, finding another similar person and the process feeds on itself. Some folks will just never get it. What they are told by someone, what they want to believe so badly, isn't always correct and the clones exist for that reason. For that kind of money (if I was going to spend that much) the car had better be well documented and the seller had better be able to back up his claims better than what this has done. Just my opinion... I know y'all wanted to know...

Well, I don't know if one has ever been verified, but here is a link to a site that says it was POSSIBLE to order a '72 SS w/ any V8, including the 307.

http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/chevrolet-chevelle/chevrolet-chevelle-history.shtml

"1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Comments: 1972 saw further dilution of the Chevelle SS. Now the SS package could be ordered on any V8 Chevelle. Thus it was possible to have a Chevelle SS with a 307 V8 that put out a meager 130bhp net. GM decreed that all engines had to be reported with their net engine ratings, which resulted in several sharp decreases even though engine power was not necessarily changed. The 350 V8 dropped to 175bhp, the 402 to 240bhp, and the 454 to 270bhp. These were sad times for performance fans indeed.

Production: 5,333 (SS 454 option)
Engines: L65 350 V8 165bhp@4000rpm, 280lb-ft@2400rpm. 350 V8 175bhp@4000rpm, 280lb-ft@2400rpm. LS3 402 V8 240bhp@4400rpm, 345lb-ft@3200rpm. LS5 454 V8 270bhp@4000rpm, 390lb-ft@3200rpm.

Maybe the info started with books like this one:

"Chevy Super Sports 1961-1976" by Terry V. Boyce

"Chevrolet further expanded the engine/powertrain combinations for this final year of the popular body style used since 1970 to include any V-8 offered for Chevelle! You could order this muscular looking street machine with a 130-hp 307 if you desired.
