: points from where to lift/raise the body

HI everyone.
I have taken all the bolts off the body mounts, disconnected steering shaft et cetera. I am not going to take the body off, but I want to raise it a few inches just enough to give me room to change the body bushings and get on top of the frame for cleanup and paint.
Where do I raise the body from? I have a 3.5 ton jack, but I am not sure where to start lifting the body at.
If you can help me, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Yanniz,

When I took off my body I removed the front fenders and nose, took out the rear lights and removed the trim. The girlfriend and I used a couple of "jack alls" and lifted the body from the body - mount access holes in the front, and the tail light holes in the back. Go slow, work one end at a time.

I fabbed up some stands from 2x4's and 3/4 plywood then screwed wheels on the bottom. I slid some 2x6's underneath with blocks on the mounting points to support it above the frame. That gave me plenty of room!

Hope that helped http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

What year is the car? The pinchweld along the lower rocker panel is incredibly strong. Take the interior out of the car to lighten it, remove the front clip and use hardwood strips to spread the weight from 2 jacks on the weld and jack it up.

There are 2 ways to do this safely. The first is to channel the strips for the weld to slip into and this is the safest way. The second is to carefully lift with a 1" by 2" by about 12 inch long strip of hardwood from the area just to the outside of the pinchweld.

I used the second method and removed the frame for restoration. In addition to the 4 points I lifted from, I shimmed and blocked support in several places while the frame wasn't under the car. It sat that way for about a month.

I used two 2x4's screwed together and cut a channel about 1/2 deep for the pinch weld to sit in. this will keep the support from slipping out from under the rocker (that wouldn't be fun).

Thanks Redrum, I might take you up on your offer.
I live in Lynwood, just North of Seattle and it sounds like you are just south of Seattle.
Thanks again.

I'm in the process of doing this very thing. I have two 4x4 with a channel for the rocker pinch weld cut into each of them them. These extend along each rocker and I was just about to clear the frame but needed to take a break to build up some more curage to finish the job. Every noise get's your adreinalin pumping. I sure hope I don't drop my car. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif
