My father in law said he has a console for a 64,65 chevelle. Did they have 3 speed tranny's back then or only PG? Please help

I assume you mean a 3-speed AUTOMATIC, correct?

The answer is NO... The Chevelle line did NOT recieve a 3-speed Auto transmission until the 1967 model year, and even then it was Big Block only (TH400).

The fullsize cars even had the powerglide for 1965, even with the 396, with the TH400 becoming "optional" in 1966 (fullsize cars).

There are kits on the market to convert the 64/65 "powerglide" shifter to a 3-speed and even a 4-speed auto shifter... Most resto parts suppliers also have indicator lenses with the correct gear patterns...

If it was a 3-speed manual trans, these used the same console as 4-speed cars, just a different shift "quadrant" emblem... 3-speed manuals were still pretty popular back then.

Yes I did mean 3 spd auto. I too thought 64.65 only had 2 spd pg back then. The indicator plate must be reproduction. Thanks

With my repro 3 speed shifter kit... I got a 3speed sticker/decal that goes right on the original powerglide indicator plate.

If I remember right, the TH400 came out about concurrent with introduction of the 396 in later 65 (for fullsize Chevrolets), but a 3 speed (TH350) for small blocks wasn't available until 69 or so. I think I still have a Chevrolet shop manual supplement for 65 turbohydramatics even.

Cool... just noticed you're from Sacramento ;)
