It seems the previous owner hid some sins in my trunk area with a thick coating of undercoating type material, most likely from a rattle can. What solvents or material would be best for loosening this crap up so it can be removed?

I think most people just use laquer thinner, a heat gun and some elbow grease with a sharp putty knife.

Diesel fuel works real good
brush it on let it set, and it comes right off.
did my inner fenders this way, bushed diesel on them twice a day for two days took them to the car wash and washed it right off.

I would be careful using lacquer thinner and a heat gun. Sounds like a deadly experiment

i am using a heated pressure washer. It works great. Only draw back is i have to push the car in and out of the garage. If I had a rotissere I could have done it in a weekend or two. Because im having to contort myself its taken 3weekends. But it is coming off clean and quickly.
I think im going to try the diesel feul and see if it helps it any.
