: What wheels to get?

Hey Guys,

Just finished the engine detailing on my 70 Chevelle. Well, just a few more odds and ends to touch up. I'm doing a sorta SS 396 clone and now it's come time to ditch the Ralley wheels in favor of something else. I originaly wanted SS wheels, but after going to the Good Guys hotrod show in Charlotte this past weekend, I am really getting turned on to the Torque Thrust IIs. What's your opinions? If I did the SS wheels, they'd be 15x7. Not sure on the TT IIs. What would look the best? I don't want 20" hooptie wheels, just something beefy looking. Thanks!

Cheers

If you want the "look" of the original but would like to put 17" or 18" wheels on the car http://www.newstalgiawheel.com/ has them in Billet Aluminum.

That way no rings to put on the wheel is totally aluminum and you can update the look to a little bigger wheel without going nuts. Not cheap though.

Wheels make or break a car's look as much as paint, and paint cost 20 times more than wheels, so it's merely a 'critical desicion'.

I know the TT II's look great. They have a timeless, classic look. They're afforable and make any car look better.

BUT

There are WAY too many cars with TT II's on them. If you're dead set on aftermarket custom wheels, consider these 15"'s:

These look KILLER compared to the TT II's! Definately more classic and are more peroid correct for a 1970.

Nothing wrong with the 15" SS wheels either.

I replaced the original 14x6 with 15x8 stock steel reproduction's from Coker. They're painted body color (like the originals) and have the tab's to accept the stock dog dish hubcaps. Fills out the wells real nice, looks bone stock to pretty much everyone, but give the car a much better stance

TTs are nice, but yeah they are getting popular. Still not as popular as the good old ralley wheels though. I've been thinking about something like this:

if I ever ditch my 15" ralleys. They are very reasonable. You can get just center caps to replace the ralley centers for less than $100/set, if you're budget minded.

I recently replaced my original 14" SS wheels with Wheel Vintiques 15x7 and 15x8. I love the TTII's also and had a tough time deciding, but I really like the SS wheel look. Just keep looking at similar cars with each type and figure out which you like best.

I think you guys may be right. The TT IIs look nice but they are getting a bit overdone. I like the Billit SS wheels. More I think about it, I may do the SS wheel look. Guess it just comes down to budget. The new Cragar SS wheels look good too. Size wise too, it's just a matter of taste. I don't think I want anything bigger than 16". Decisions decisions!!!!

I wanted an authentic 70's look on my 68SS so searched out a set of original Keystone Raider spokes, with the Keystone center caps, just like I bought new for my first 68SS back in the 70's when everyone and their brother was running Cragars. Sort of like Cragar, but just different enough to be a little unique. If you want a unique look for you car, the wheels can be a great place to get it, whatever you decide.

I knew a guy in VA that had a green Chevelle and he had TT's on it. They were the chrome lip and charcoal grey ones. They looked good on the car, did you try those yet?

Yeah, those gray spoke ones are Torque Thrust D's. I like those as well. I'm leaning more towards the SS ones the more I look at 70 SS cars. I may have found a 55 Chevy for a good deal so now I'm not sure if the new wheels would be an option. Might just have to put new rubber on the Ralleys. We'll see. Thanks for the replies and the thoughts.

I got some 15x10 Ralleys for the rear of my Elky with 295/50's and kept 14x6 on the front with 225/70/14 tires looks good and the 295/50's really fill the wells up
