Hey guys, i have a 70 Chevelle i have been working on for the last several months. I am ready to get it painted. I am going cortez silver with black stripes. I already have 1 gallon of the silver and i would be removing everything on the car, glass, bumpers, door handles, chrome, everything but the windshields. It has a coat of primer on the body right now but i do not know what kind it is or how long ago it was applied. The coat looks good with no rust spots, so that will in my opinion need to be stripped first to satisfy any doubts that i have. The only body work the car will require is to align the two front fenders with the rest of the body, they are repops and they aren't lined up straight at the moment. Considering all of this, i have the paint, i will take everything off, and only minor body work, what would be a good estimate for a paint job on the car including the stripes. Would you guys recommend getting a clear coat, and what is the price difference on something like that? Thanks a lot for your help. Right now it is drivable so i am going to start showing up at body shops getting estimates very soon. Also, any of you guys in the Bay Area know of a good body shop in the Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, Oakland, Danville area? Thanks a lot for your guys help. I have never gotten a car painted before so any information would be really appreciated.

Daniel,
My 71' is going to the paint shop Monday.(You can see it in the link below). It sounds alot like your car, inasmuch as I have taken off all the chrome, bumpers, handles etc. I did however leave the windows in. The car is in primer now, but, the shop that is going to paint it said he will probably take most of it back down as, like you, we do not know what kind it is or how long it has been on. I have visited many shops and have gotten pricing from 1k to 4k to paint it. the guy I decided on says he can do it for $1500.00 which seems very reasonable to me. The reason I went with him was not neccasarily his price but because he took the time to go over everything that he would do, what steps he would take, how many coats of this and that blah, blah, blah. He really set my mind at ease about everything. I have seen this guys work and he does excellent paint. But I think him taking the time to explain everything and really listen to what I wanted is what really sold me. Ask questions and as always, look at previous jobs they have done.
Not sure it any of this really helps you or not, but there it is.

Dwayne

BTW, mine is going to be Champagne Gold with SS Sripes
